Man, and I thought I'd seen everything.

Out a couple evenings ago minding our own beeswax. My brother lost a lip hooked 48ish fish up top after a brief headshaking bout, then lost another not quite as big after 6-8 jumps and the crazy thing wrapping in his line 63 times. I got thirsty a couple hours later, and reeled my creeper to the boat, set my rod down, and walked to the cooler to get a water. It was now after dark, and I asked my brother if we should stay on the lake till morning, or go the island and nap and head back out as we had not had any after dark action to speak of. Just then(after a few full minutes of sitting still), I heard a splash, and my rod sliding across the deck and bow. Luckily I was able to use my buddy Greg who was sleeping in the bottom of the boat as a spring board to help launch me to the front and grab the end of the cork before the rig went in. I lost the fish shortly after, but had fun in doing so, and even more releived to get my hands back on my rod. At 8 AM, Greg lost a big fish up top on the same rock pile, when we went back after I went in to clean my shorts. Fish 4, us zero. But OOOH, Excitement She Wrote!!

The same thing happened to Sue this summer on Wabigoon. We had just talked to the Inspector in Lew's bay, and she had decided to sit on the front deck and rest for a while. She had a Violent Strike Spinnerbait tied on and had it a foot out of the water, when a 36" pike leaped up and slammed the lure. I couldn't figure out WHAT she was doing, but eventually helped her up while she fought the fish, and won.

Jason,
I had near reel terminating experience this year on the WI River. My line guide had somehow managed to come out of its "frame piece guide" and needed to be re-inserted. I decided to take the reel apart and fix it before any further damage was done. I left my glide bait hanging over the side. About 10 minutes later a big SPLASH right next to the side of the boat and my half assembled reel exploded a few parts into the air. In about two seconds the fish hit, reel exploded, fish left (no hooks in her) and my parts all landed in the boat. All I saw was a decent tail dissapear.

This year in Canada I left my lures in the water a lot while not fishing. LOL, I got a 38 inch norhtern on my blk/white Bull Dawg. Just make sure you have your reel in a place where it can't go to far and is trapped and your drag is set low and reel is in the cast setting and..... Was still a shock as I was sitting back enjoying nature drinking a beer...
