Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Presentations For Pre-Spawn

Just gathering a few thoughts and opinions here......Going to hit Lake XPRQ on Saturday, weather going to be low 40s, possible rain or snow. Forage base is made up mostly of schooling bait fish from 8-21", which at times will relate to deeper water. My main quandry is bait SIZE: many people advocate down-sizing early in the year, but generally are talking about post spawn.....but before the skies do the nasty, what are people's opinion on the size of the food the skies will seak out. Secondly, with rising temps and precipitation (pretty ideal in winter/spring I think) what is your (not so humble) opinions about the mood of the muskie in terms of a willingness you chase a faster moving bait, versus that eat or nothing mentality. Throw out your thoughts, much appreciated....

Slamr, I'd say it's a toss up as far as bait size. I would go with the avg. size lures, and not down size too much. The slower presentations are the way to go this time of year unless you get at least 3 days of warm weather.

Slamr,

Small baits. FOR SURE!. Too be exact, if I were on an Illinois lake today, I would tie on : 1)White spinner bait single Colorado 2)craw colored 3/4 rattle trap 3)6 inch Reef Hawg 4) 6 inch Sluggo

You should forget about going musky fishing and go try and catch a bass or two. Then, you will catch a muskie. That is just the way the ball bounces in the spring.
