Heading up to Canada in a few weeks, and I'm told that the fish are already making their yearly weed to rock progression. What does everyone do to chase muskies on the rocks in the heat of the mid summer?

Thanks!

Classic Sponger!

I work the stones with soft plastics and gliders in high light times, and surface baits in the low light times. The approach depends on how many people I have in the boat, if I am alone I parallel the breaklines and cover top to breakline. If I have to control the rig for two or three, I approach slightly parallel covering a piece of the water by each angler.

If possible, keep the sun in your eyes, too.

My favorite for the stones? Creatures.

During a tournament on LOTW three years ago, my MI Chapter put 21 Muskies in the boat in 28 fishing hours. 19 of those were caught on Rad Dog spinnerbaits, I caught one on a Shallow Invader, and my brother caught one on a Suick. Most were caight around the rocks, but if you find rocks with weeds close, that could prove to be even better. Topwater didn't move many fish at that time, which I think was late August, but you might want to try Topraiders or pacemakers too. I think Black bucktails with nickel blades produced for some other people there at that time. Good luck.

Shield rock is different than stones in the midwest. At least I think so anyway.

Like stated already.... spinnerbaits and topwater are prime choices. Seems to me that when shield muskies are on the rocks, they are very willing to engage a lure.... thus no need to finesse them. Heck, last week in MN I witnessed a large musky start hunting down my spinnerbait from 30 yards away!!! Well out of sight range... but the fish obviously knew the bait was their and meant business. Very cool.

On LOTW where water clarity can be limited.... tightening up the spacing between casts is a good idea. I'll usually keep the boat speed at a pretty high clip, but snug up closer to the structure to allow for shorter casts. With two guys you can "machine gun" a rocky shore or other structure very quickly and efficiently with a topwater/spinnerbait combo. SPEED in your presentation also seems to do well on the rocks.

Good luck in Canada.
