Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Will split tail fins heal?

Subject: Will split tail fins heal?

I have witnessed muskies with split fins from poor landing nets. Will these fins, mostly tail fins, heal in time?

Stik-
I'm not at expert here but from what I remember, split tails do not heal. Once split always split.

If I am wrong let me know.

Over time they will heal. I know this one has been debated and stirred around , but the fins will heal. Not completely, but eventually. The reasoning that the time is so great in length is the area of the damage. Obviously the tail is used a great deal in a fishes life so the healing process is slow. I know we tagged a fish over five years ago on a lake up north that had a slit tail in several places from a previous engagement with a net. That fish was just caught last year and the tail was close to fully healed, with scar tissue filled between the gaps. Do all fish heal on the split fins. Possibly no. But I have never seen conclusive evidence that this trully hurts them. I fins are clipped by DNR biologists for idenfication all the time, and there is no true damage to the fish and its life. I know that fish come in my boat all the time that are damaged from whatever and they swim away soundly. I am not saying we should beat up or not worry about the care of a fish, or that a person should go out of his or her way to split up tails and what not, but Muskies, like other fish are fairly tough and built to withstand mothernature, so they heal, or live on normally. I hope this helps. By the way my information is given me by a friend I have in the DNR that is Biologist in LaCrosse.

I can`t say for sure, but I read a piece some time ago (I beleive it was in Bassmaster Magazine) about the worn tails of bass after spawning. Largemouths and smallmouths beat their tails against the lake floor to make beds and many of them become rounded bloody stumps. I`m sure if any of you have caught bass in the spring, you`ve noticed this. Well, they said in the article....as long as no infection occurs, the tail will heal and grow back. I figure if that didn`t happen , we`d be seeing a race of mutant stump-tailed bass swimming around. So my best guess would be yes, they probably do heal themselves in time.
Besides "Ask the pros", perhaps we could have a "ask the fisheries biologists". Beaver

If we are built from cells, then cells will replicate, replicating cells cause building blocks of life, which make that which can be flesh, weather matter of mammal, fish or otherwise. Therefore all things that grow can heal. That is basic biology.

It never ceases to amaze me how people get offended by the this subject. I was just merely pointing out that fins will heal, and grow back. Yes it is that simple. If someone wants to take a differant road, or better yet show me otherwise I will be happy to say I am wrong. Until I see otherwise in proof by studies, and what I see in mother nature. I guess I am going to believe what is that simple.

Oh one other thing Mister no identity for myself. I never said I was a biologist, but I do know several. I fish with them a couple times a year. I do ask them tons of questions that relate to muskies and the questions people have like this. I do not give out information that would confuse, or harm other people, or harm fishermen in their knowledge of fishing or the species they pursue. I did not mean to offend with my answer I merely wanted to say that though long term the healing process is that simple. You may take this anyway you want, and continue in your attempts to insult me now. As for me I am going fishing.

Dandy Don, it`s basic biology....in this world some people have mouths that are connected to their brains while others are connected to their colons.....and coincidentally, they usually don`t have names.

AU, that`s OK, at least you had a gentlemanly reply. You`re right about cartilege and tendons and certain things not healing themselves. If they could, I wouldn`t be looking at rotator cuff surgery right after freeze up.
There used to be a couple of fisheries biologists that posted on some other sites that I visit. I wish we could get one "on staff" to answer these kinds of questions.

I also believe they will heal up in time. But its best not to get cut fins at all. I have been using the new Beckmen Fin Saver net and with coated tight mess I have not seen a split fin yet.[:sun:]

Oh cheez. Look my apologies also. I did not mean to degrade, debase, or seem omnipotent to anyone. I am sorry if I offended. I am just repeating what I have been told by those that know. Look AU I was not attemtping to smack you down, I was just answering back. I know what you are saying, and what you said is right in its own way. I am just saying what I have been told by my friends who are educated in this subject Hope I did not offend. Lets all just pop the top and cool down. [:halo:]

Along the lines of this subject, does netting fish do more harm than it`s worth. I`ve hand-landed many fish, but I limit myself to jig caught or bucktail caught fish. I`m not taking the chance of getting hooked myself with jerkbait or crankbait hooks. Small fish I don`t even attempt to land. Normally a needle nose vise grip and a little shake is all it takes. I`ve seen some guys on TV hand land fish in the mid to upper forties. What about the rest of you guys. Do you hand land fish when possible or is it better to get the fish in quickly and run the risk of fin and tail damage, in order to get the fish back in the water more safely? Beav

I net em.. I am not going to get my self hurt trying to hand land a muskie. Net em, get the hooks out while the fish is in the net (either cutting or the normal way), Take a quick pic and gone. I just got the new fin saver net as well. It is currently up in Canada getting broken in. WITHOUT ME!! New baby = no week long trip to Canada this year.[:((]

Typically we hand land everything, but most of our fish stay in the water if they can be quickly released. In other words if the lure will come out quickly they never get touched by a net or cradle. If its one that looks picture worthy, then we bag the fish with the net, leaving it in the water until the quick lift and pic. Personally for me unless its of monster proportions I typically just pop them loose. Serveral friends of mine are like this also. I feel for you daveP except in the reverse order. My friends are having kids and cant go[:((] My kids are just about all out of the house[:praise:] I guess starting super early in life with kids worked out for the better after all. Just kidding. Good luck with the new one, they are really precious gifts. [] You didnt say boy or girl though.

An observation:
The DNR in Michigan used to clip the top of tail fins in spring when taking eggs. Those fish would fully regenerate that portion of their tail by mid-June. Granted, we are talking about a 1" section off the top of their tail and not badly split fins but it was surprising that they grew back in only 3 months.

At first I was not going to to reply, but just out of curiousity Larry, is this some attempt to aggrevate, or start an argument of some sort? If so I dont see why, but do hope it is just humor. Like I said in my previous postings I am just parroting what I have been told by those who are trained and work with fish. If I offended you and have made you mad let me know we can talk it over.
