| I had planned to take my daughters (ages 7 and 10) to Mosquito Creek Lake (Ohio) next week for some walleye fishing, but after their brothers success at Leesville (each caught a 38" muskie), they want to go there instead. Both girls are more oriented toward food then trophies, so I have explained that any muskie less than 50" long will be quickly released.
However, since I did hook up with a saugeye this week on a Tenessee Shad Sisson 41, I was thinking that there probably are some muskie lures that tend to catch a accidental walleye (or saugeye) while muskie fishing, and that you guys probably know which ones they are. Catching a few saugeye will probably satisfy the girl's need to bring something home to eat. I'm thinking about using mainly Sisson 41's and 43's with the occasional minnow-shaped Rapala, especially when it starts to get dark and the fish aren't so deep. Or what about a spoon behind a dipsy to get it down to the fish? We've also got a few Hot N Tot's that should work well for Saugeye, but is it realistic to think that a Muskie would hit something this small?
Thanks for any tips here. Hour after hour of trolling can be pretty boring for young kids, and I'm hoping to provide a bit more excitement without significantly reducing the chances of catching some muskie. (The kids are really happy about ANY muskie, a 29" fish is almost as exciting as something twice as big.)

| Hot-n-Tots, Shad Raps, Wally Divers, Ralalas with keel sinkers of varying weights off the dipseys, Jr Thundersticks.
All of those are good for walleye, sauger and saugeye.
Let them pick the colors, they like that part. That's why I have 100 Firetiger Shadraps of every size. Funny thing is that they are a top producer on The Mississippi River where I fsh.
You really can't fish for them both with the same lure at the same time. You're right on with the post when you say "Accidental.", because that's what it would be.
How many rods can you run?
Fish one rod for saugeyes "on purpose" and fish the others the way that you normally would.

Ohio law allows two rods per angler, but, in practice, I can only run 5 at a time, even if I use dipies on the outside. I'll probably run muskie lures on the inside three rods, and target saugeye/walleye on the outside rods with the dipsies. I just need to decide on whether to emphasize spoons, hot-n-tots or (low drag minnow style) rapalas behind the dipsies and whether to emphasize Lee Sisson's or deep tail dancers on the three inside rods (no dipsies).
The deep tail dancer is a legitimate walleye/muskie cross over lure. I know the Sisson 41 is a great muskie lure, I'm just not sure how many walleye/saugeye it might produce.

| I guess that it all depends on the structure.
To keep the kids happy, I would target saueyes on 2 rods and muskies on 3, your choice where to run them. |
