Okay, I realize I'm about to show my arse here, but I'm new to muskie fishing so I don't mind too much. [:)]

I have seen on both this board and muskiecentral, people talking about doing a figure 8. What exactly is this, and why is it important?

Thanks!

What they are talking about when they say do a figure "8" is at the end of every retrieve make a change of direction with your rod tip and move the lure slowly through the water in as if you were drawing a big number 8.Some put their rod down in the water and do this very deep ,others just do it close to the surface.I myself don't do figure "8"'s on my home waters, because I believe the fish are to big to make the sharp turns to catchup with thew bait,I do big slow deep circles. The change of direction at the end of the retrieve has accounted for fish at the end of may fishers rods.Nothing like having an explosion next to the boat, one must always be prepared for that moment. That is why I always hit the free spool and use my thumb on the spool as a drag as I work the figure "8" or big circles, when the fish hits that close to the rod tip, something will break if you can't feed some slack quickly, all while controling the tention as to not get slack in between the fish and you.Always make a change of direction at the boat at the end of your retrieve ,even if it is just an "L" going the other direction for the last two feet.
