I have been toying with getting another Bull dawg, and it has become apparent through all of my message board perusings that I need a black one(I own a mag Walleye and two regulars, a motor oil and orange, and an all orange). I started using the ones I do own last year, and started having a bit of success on them. I hear arguments for both the regular and Mag versions. I have personnally had more action on the regular one. If you were going to buy just one Dawg for all/many water conditions, which would it be? Do you guys prefer the glow tails on your Dawgs? I am not one that thinks color makes a whole lot of difference, but it seems the Dawg lovers really have set preferences. I have gotten some advice from open water guys saying the Mag is the only way to go, and I'm leaning that way. Structure guys have another take? Anyone do real well straight cranking these things, or burning them? I seem to have most success jerking the ones I do own, but need to get more fluent with their effectiveness. I would think a bucktail retreive would also work in many instances. Dawgs, and jigging jigs are two presentations I need to get more familiar with in the coming months/years. I might as well start now.

Jason,
Go with the Mags. The fish will eat them. As far as one to meet all conditions, go with a Shallow Mag dawg. This way, if you want to fish deeper with it, you can add some bell sinkers to the front hook to get it down. If you want to fish shallower over the weeds etc, take the weight off and you can keep it up there. Also, if you bend the head up a bit, that will help keep it shallower for fishing over shallow structure.

If you fish at night, throw those dawgs and straight crank em. Myself and others have had some excellent success at night with dawgs on a straght retreive. It doesn't feel like much coming in, but rest assured, the fish know it's there. I haven't really burned one in yet, with the exception of a shallow dawg. If you burn that on the surface, the tail makes some crazy noise. I haven't done that enough to give you results, but from what it sounds like, it will get eaten.

Black/Orange....mag
All black.... mag
All black....Big Joe
All White....Big Joe

With these 4 rubber baits, you'll be able to hit EVERY place/situation you fish across North America!!

Just my 2 cents worth!

If you want to retrieve it like a bucktail....get a Big Joe. Very effective bait on a straight retrieve. I like the Mag Dawgs when jerking....can't beat the Joe on a straight retrieve.

Joel makes an excellent point on the versatility of the shallow dawgs. I love jerking them violently over weed beds.

To answer your original question...I fish Dawgs primarily around structure and I prefer the Mag to the regular. Why? ....because I catch more fish on it...I love the bigger profile.

Reefer,
One of my newly aquired tricks (upon observing Troyz the bulldawg freak) is using the bulldawg very much like a bucktail. Straight retrieving Bulldawgs when the fish are just looking at Bucktails is often just enough "different" action to get them to commit.

I think Mag and Regular is specific to each situation. If they will go on a regular I am not going to bother heaving the Mag around.

One problem with the reg dawgs is the fish actually inhale the bait deep into their thoat/gullet. I have had some pretty bad experiences with small fish completely inhaling the reg dawg. The small fish still go after the mag, don't let the size scare ya!

420, you make an excellent point. I had a nice big fish inhale one last fall that took a bit longer to unhook than I would have liked. I do like Norms points too though, as my Bulldawg use was intended to be break time, as I can throw the regular one pretty easily, and straight retrieving it is a breeze. I see tha tmost here like the mags, and I too choose big with most of my other lures, so see why. I see the reaction is split between black and glow and just black. I actually wish they made one that just the tip of the tail was white or glow, and not the whole tail.

Also interesting on the joes and their straight retreive effectiveness. That might be the route I take for that type of presentation, and will just break down and get a mag blackie to keep em honest.

Thanks!

The black with glow tail is awesome. It's a "soft" glow compared to a "hot" glow that you would get with ice fishing jigs. Looks like a translucent white color in the water. Never fished at night to see how it looks. I used to piss and moan about the weight of mag dawgs till I finally ponied up the cash to buy a rod that could handle them effectiely. IMO the rod makes all the difference.

Reef, you can make one with just a glo tip. Also, for night fishing, you can make the head glow. All you have to do is take a glow tail, (or another plastic that glows, cut off what you want to use, then mold it to the black dawg. You can make any colors you want that way that aren't stock.

I agree completely with B420. I never liked throwing the Mags until I finally started using the right rod with them. Now I might never throw a regular dawg again. The difference the rod makes is huge!

I would go with a Black and Orange Mag Dawg or Wisconsin Walleye Mag Dawg or if you want to go crazy like me get a Super Mag dawg in Walleye...love those things

I got to see a Real Fish in the water for the first time the other day. I liked what I saw. Can't wait for the Magnums to come out!

Thanks for the recomendations. i went with an all black mag D. We had our club outing this weekend(which my partner won with a 42", and the only legal fish), and I got a chance to try it out. While out in 40' on an Oneida Co. gin bottle, I had one of the most vicous open water strikes I can remember. It doubled my rod on the pause. I got a hook set, and a few heard deep head shakes, but then off. the dawg was shredded. AARRGGH. Oh well, a new confidence lure. Just have to try to connect next time. Thanks!!

AWH

I threw a bullhead real fish in a tournment last week for at least 2 hours. I also liked what I saw, nice eratic action, can work it fast or slow, rip 'em, puimp em up and down....just like a dawg. But all that time I threw the real fish, I saw nothing, no follows, no nothing. Switched to a cisco magnum dawg and proceeded to have 7 follows by muskies and my partner and I were in the same area. Didn't boat any, but at least they were chasin. Did the fish suddenly "turn on" or did the dawg wake em up?? I would guess the later.

I love my dawgs

Ubuck,

I think when those magnum Real Fish come out they're going to be deadly! Can't wait until August...that's when I'll have some in stock! The masses will see them come out in 2007. But limited availability will be had by late summer.
