Posts: 1243 Location: Musky Tackle Online, MN | As many of you know, the DNR here in Minnesota has put in a proposal to begin stocking muskies in Gull Lake north of Brainerd in Crow Wing/Cass Counties. Taking steps like this and having these proposals pass are essential in maintaining the outstanding state of our musky fishery. Whether people realize it or not, having a top notch musky fishery like we do in Minnesota positively impacts its neighboring states such as Wisconsin, and it can have a positive trickle down effect through the entire range where muskies exist. The Gull Lake issue will undoubtedly have some strong opposition, as you will see anywhere that proposals such as this are brought forward. But Gull Lake could be a bigger battle than most. It’s long been known as a tremendous walleye lake, one of the tops in the state. This will continue with the addition of muskies. But because of the misunderstandings about muskies that are out there, the opposition will speak up loudly on this. For those of you that aren’t familiar with Gull Lake, here’s what we’re looking at. Gull is a large reservoir system, totaling over 9,400 acres on just Gull Lake alone, along with a number of other smaller connecting lakes. It’s deep at over 80 feet with an endless amount of structure. Large rock structures, sand flats, reeds, great cabbage, etc. The forage base is phenomenal. Huge numbers of suckers, ciscoes and perch that will allow these muskies to thrive. I could see some quick growing, wide bodied fish out of these waters. Gull Lake is a phenomenal fishery that is perfectly suited to support a tremendous musky fishery. When you think of the classic type of musky lakes, Gull Lake is a perfect blue print. The DNR knows what a perfect fit that muskies would be in Gull Lake but they NEED everyone’s support on this. Whether it’s sending an email, writing a letter, giving them a call, or showing up in person, your support is needed. Nothing will have a greater impact than showing up at the public input meeting that they will be having this summer. If you fish for muskies and you’re able to attend this meeting, you will want to attend. The future of musky fishing in Minnesota needs your support. With Gull Lake being the fishery that it is and the history that this lake has, this is quite possibly the biggest hurdle we will ever see with the musky fishery in Minnesota. Whether this passes or comes up short will have a significant impact on what the future holds. When is this public input meeting? They have yet to set a firm date but they’re looking at sometime in July. To be notified as soon as the date, time and location is set, please send me a PM or an email. I will send out a bulk email to everyone that’s interested. That way you can clear your calendar and come to Brainerd to support the future of muskies in Minnesota. Thank You, Aaron | ||
