Are you guys throwing the large Bull Dawgs all the time? Which do you like more, the regular Dawg or the Up town? I got to get with this Bull Dawg thing!!

Thanks

Primarly now I go with the mag dawgs or now this year super mag dawgs (pounders) and will stick with that throughout the year. It's probably a result of the fact that the mag dawgs I have are the originals with the cut tail whereas the regular bulldawgs are the newer style.

Great bait though...and you'll probably ask yourself a thousand times over "am I working this thing right?" If it's in the water, it is being used correctly. Long pulls, twitches, jerks, etc. Just keep them moving.

Spring Dawgs, Dawgs, Mag Dawgs, Pounders, they all work. Mag Dawgs are my preference most times, unless it is really early in the season when I use Spring Dawgs Shallow and Regular Dawgs Deeper.

I've had good luck with the mag's in the fall. Especially if I'm fishing suckers because the mag's seem to get a ton of follows and I can covert them with the meat. Overall, I like the medium dawgs. I have a black and orange one that caught 7 fish last season. Try and get the older dawg with the flat bellies. The ones with the "cup" or "u" on the bottom are a bit stiffer and dont have the same tails.

I have a lot of the older ones, but I thought people liked the new ones because the tails were longer. What about the Uptowns? What's the big difference with those?

To the excitement of most, all bulldawgs are hand poured now. The major difference was last year is that the regular bulldawgs were injected and the uptowns were poured, there is an obvious action difference between them. Now, the major difference is color selection, eyes, gills, etc. Outside of color, not huge differences to fish. If I am in a tournament situation I like the regular size most times but when I'm fishing for catching big fish I love the magnums. I don't see myself using the pounders unless I'm on a spot where I know a big, big fish is.

The newer ones seem really soft again, just got two new mag dawgs yesterday and they are softer than last years, I think.

Is that good or bad?

To troll them do you have to add weight to them?

Dude

(and others)

The new bulldawgs are flat bellied (hand poured) just like the original bulldawgs, and they have the tail that's cut from the body and not molded like the ones from last year and the year before. They're little softer and the action of the tail is way better than the ones with the molded tail. They are also a bit heavier then the molded bulldawgs. (shut up, you mean you guys didn't compare them all closely like I did and weigh the different styles???) The only thing I really like about the injection molded/cupped belly bulldawgs is if you synchronyze them like you do with a bucktail they make a louder pop when they hit the water.

Does that matter? I don't think so, but I get a kick out of it.

Back to the question -- I like the mag dawgs better because i feel like I know where they're at -- they sink about a foot a second, so you can count them down easily, and they (duh) have more weight to them so you actually feel something when you're working them. Between the uptown dawgs and the regulars? Other than the colors offered I don't think it matters -- no fish is going to even see the scale pattern on the uptown dawg. They eyes? Well... That may make a difference, but I think it's the tail that makes fish want to eat them honestly. Don't ask me about their fish catching ability -- I just miss fish with mine.

Pike like 'em though.

Now that I'm thinking about it -- the custom colors at this year's shows look like the spots/stripes were painted on... I wonder if you could paint the eyes on the regular bulldawgs???

Here's a pic of some mods that I've had decent success with. Nothing crazy but it has worked for me and I'd thought I'd pass it along. I added a 5/0 774 to the front cause it seems like they always hit the head, the gunner adds some vibration, and the bell sinker keeps the "shallow" version running straight. Unfortunately I lost a 30lber a few weeks back on this bait so maybe this will bring back some of its mojo. Hope this adds something to you arsenal!

the shallow reg dawg IMO is better without weight...and not running straight...twitch it and crank it slowly and that thing does some cool stuff that gets fish to eat it...

I guess that's the beauty of the bell sinker. It comes off in 2 seconds if you want to work over the top of weeds or slowely over open water. Plus you can increase the weight if you wanna work it deeper with some speed. Lots of versatility.

Over here (Norway, Sweden) Bulldawgs are very popular in early season for pike. when the pike stays deep and close to the bottom, we remove the bottom hooks, and rig the hooks with wire, and push them into the back of the bait, this way, they dont hook up with the bootom so easily, when you bottomcrawl/bounce them. Many big early season fish is caught this way.

I like the spring and mags over the regulars. last year I caught six fish on a spring dawg plus two bonus walleyes over 25". I like the shallow mag dawgs because you can get them to hang better on the pause.
