Location: oswego, il | I have not but i was thinking of going the opposite way for me jerkbait leaders this year. I am going to try some lighter single strand wire. I am finding some of the heavier wire is affecting the way many baits, especially glide baits and how they run. I recently pool demoed a glider and it would not run hardly at all on a 260lb single strand leader. I changed to a lighter wire one and the bait was amazing. |

| Todd...How light of a wire did you use? I'm going to start making my own and was wondering what you preffered.

Location: oswego, il | pb, I use american fishing wire mostly in the 174 to 340lb range. They make a 105lb wich is thin but will handle big lures. They will bend up good when you catch a fish but they straighten easy and the wire is cheap enough I can make a bunch and change when necessary. |

| I have made a few bucktails in the past using bicycle spokes. They are pretty easy to tie and the other thing is a fish won't bend them up to much.
The other thing is when your town has clean up day you can just drive around and grab tons of spokes.

| Eagle Tails made a pretty good run with them as far as spinners go but for Leaders they may be a bit extreme |

Location: Freedom, WI | Like Todd said only I use 105 or 124 pound wire depending on the rod I have it on. After a couple of days steady casting the lighter stuff can break from fatigue (specificly snagging in rocks alot) . So every now and then or when it gets bent bad replace it. When you make it yourself they are cheap. Also I do not use a snap or a swivel (except on bucktails, then swivel only) and split ring to all my baits. Will have to look into shark leader like guest mentioned. |

| I typically use anything from 105-175lb for single strand wire, for sure buy in bulk and make them yourself, you will save $ for sure. The bicycle spokes are way too heavy for leader application, but, for baits they are prolly fine.
If you guys are having trouble with gliders working properly, not getting enough action out of them, you should atleast give fluoroCarbon a try, I have always been a single strand steel leader guy, but, after seeing a huge improvement on action on certain baits of mine, I started using 100lb Climax, have caught quite a few fish on them. they get a little nicked up after a few fish and dragging accross rocks, but, just retie when you notice abrasions. |

Location: Muskoka Ontario,Canada | The best leaders I have ever used to date are the Stealth Tackle flourocarbon leaders made by John Bette.
I got tired of having to straighten out solid strand wire, even the 400 lb test so I made the switch.
These leaders also don't hang up half as much on the cast or while working glider style jerkbaits. I love them so much that I now Pro Staff them. Seriously excellent leaders. |

As little as I use them, I just buy S.S spokes from the local bike shop. Otherwise, I think Bike mail order companies, like Nash (google it) would be a cheaper source.

| Do you guys seriously use used piano wire for leaders? Leader material is so cheap why would you risk using wire that you do not know the strength or how fatiqued it is? |

The price of steel has jumped 7% in the last 4 weeks. Piano wire really does not see alot of stress, except for the portion that gets wrapped around the posts, and you don't use that anyway. If it looks strong, does not show any signs of stress when wrapping, and it's free, I'm gonna use it. |

They also attach the wire with twists inside the piano, just like one twists the eye on a leader and/or bucktail.
I also saw on a site on how to make leaders, when they wanted to cut the tag, from the twist, he bent it back and forth and broke it off, I cant do that with my wire.
I have had no problems with the one I use for pike (I dont remember which size i get from the pianoshop around the corner)
But the main reason I use it, is because I have to mailorder any options.
