Hey guys, I haven't gotten into painting yet (working myself up!) but I have a question on top coating a used lure. what do you use to fill in the hook gouges before coating it? I bought some envirotex and made a drying wheel from an old rotissere(sp?) I did the 1st few over the weekend with pretty good results however the envirotex soaked in to the bare wood in some spots and didn't cover very well. I thought before I did some of my better lures I would try to fix some of the gouges and maybe touch them up with model paint or something before coating. Any ideas?
Thanks, Scott

jerkin,
You have two options when refinishing a bait. Just apply more finish over the top of the bait. Envirotex works well for this as long as it sticks to whatever the bait was previously painted with. It will soak in where the wood is exposed. Just give the bait a light sanding after the first coat and then put another one on it. The second coat will look much better, almost as good as new. If you want to fill in some of the damage you will end up having to repaint the bait. If that is what you end up doing I would just sand the bait down, reprime, paint and reseal. Either one works, but the starting over option requires more on your end for detail. I would advise recoating the bait before it gets past the point of no return. Another tip is to use a propane torch to remove all air bubbles after you get the enviro on. Hope that helps.

I thought about that Don, just 2nd coating it, but what I was worried about was the finish being to heavy and killing the action of the lure. A lot of the ones I want to do are small jointed Wileys that I troll with. They get pretty beat up pulling them around the lake year after year at 5 and 6 mph so I want to do something with them. Do you think the buildup of 2 coats would affect the action of a 5 1/2 or 6 inch lure? I will definitely do my newer lures before they get to that point now that I have the means, it only takes a few minutes for each one.
Thanks, Scott
