Geez.
Who wouldn't want to be those guys and fish these waters. I was never Doug Johnson and I have never been Dick Pearson and I am likely never to set my boat in the drink on LOW, but I do get to fish Lake X!! most years, for a week or two.
My question is "Which is more rewarding, catching the good fish in Lake Mudville that has permanent boat wakes imbedded on the surface in the prime musky spots, or going up to Ken and Barbie Lake or Lake X and catching this and that and seeing this and that?".
My big enjoyment about Lake X comes from the lack of pressure and a decent supply of big, not giant fish that don't seem to know the color code and order number of the baits you choose to throw. I usually run up some numbers and some good fish while there but...is this the real world or is it Ken and Barbie Land?
On a cockiness level I would have to say that I am more full of myself when I pull a triple on Mudville or Weedwacker Lake, than when I do it on Lake X. I know how tough a triple on Mudville is and WEEDWACKER???, why those triples are like musky miracles and only a musky God could ever do that there!![:bigsmile:]
The thing I love about lake X is the many options of attack that I have and the wide variations in fish position. The thing I hate about Mudville is the sameness, but the fish and conditions in Mudville do shape a certain finesse and delicacy of presentation that might never have been developed on lake X.
Mudville or Lake X?, and could you enjoy one without ever knowing the other?[:)] |

| I fish LOTW . I have fished with D.J. The reason I keep going back is not so much the fish but the lake itself . Don't have to worry about fighting for a spot just go out and fish. I can go 50 miles to a spot or 50 feet. I love that lake. [:p] |

I've always thought that if you think you consistantly deal with or catch the bigger (or biggest) fish in the system you are fishing, you have every right to feel some pride in that and a sense of accomplishment from it. If you are doing that in Mudville as apposed to to Lake X, I think that is even more of an accomplishment, those fish are probably few/tougher to catch. It also tells one, I believe, that if you payed your dues and put in your time you could go to most other systems and deal with and catch the better fish out of those systems as well.
That's the benchmark for me as to someones "musky prowness". Can they go into a water system and consistantly produce some of the bigger fish out of it? It's one thing to catch numbers in excess of 100 muskies a year; it's quit another to consistantly catch the bigger fish in the system.
That puts you into a whole different league, playing a whole different ballgame........in my opinion.

| I will agree with Firstsixfeet, my most satisfing catch last year was a fat 45 incher out of High Falls in June, with all the skiers, boaters, jet-skiers and fiherman buzzing around the lake and I mean buzzing. But I do love Lake of Woods and when I can afford it try to get up there twice a season for week long stays. Your chances of nailing a pig are sooooooooo much better! But again I was more proud of that 45 incher than 48 incher I got on LOW last year. It took alot more effort and praying for the 45. Al[:praise:] |

| The main reason a 45" fish on a lake like Mudville is better than a 48" on LOTW is because of EXPECTATION. When one goes for a week to a place like LOTW, they expect to catch some really nice fish, and also expect to one day catch that fish of a lifetime. When going to a lake like Mudville, your expectations aren't as high, but when you catch a really nice fish, it makes you feel a lot better. This is the way I perceive this question.

When I catch a 45+ on Pewaukee I am trilled to death....but up in Canada its fun,, but you know its not the one you were looking for.
The fact is muskie fishing is muskie fishing enjoy it where ever you can fish. You have to understand others get better waters to fish and you just have to make the most of the waters you have.
The day I laugh at a 35" and get mad for catching it....is the day I should sell my boat and find another sport.[;)] |

| Guy I understand the "challenge" deal with your local lake but if you have never been to Canada you need to go,,sheer rock walls undewater reefs like you read about in books, eagles over head,,I live in Minnesota where are fishing is very good but I spent 3 weeks in canada last year and another three this year,,its just a whole different world. You really need to experience it. |
