Posts: 180 Location: Kinkaid Lake, IL | I just purchased a 2005 50 hp 4 stroke, but my boat has a 2 stroke on it. I am sure there is still oil in the gas tank. What should I do before I installl the new motor. I understand I must drain the tank, but what "tricks of the trade" can I do to ensure a safe switch. How bad is it to break in a new 4 stroke with a little oil in the gas. Scott

The amount of residue oil in the tank would be som minute, that it would affect nothing. Depending on the location of the gas tank fill, you may be able to tilt the boat/tank up to get as much out with a siphon. Whatever is left will be little and will not affect the motor. Steve

| when running a 4-stroke, how much does the octane level of the gas matter? what about ethanol blends, or should you stick to straight gas? | |||

Location: The Yahara Chain | Ethonal gas can harm your fuel lines... do to the extra moisture in the ethonal gas.... I don't think it harms your motor. That is what my owner manuel says....Quote the manuel "never more"

| I just got a 2005 Suzi 115 4 stroke, used, but really "new." The dealer at Kinkaid Marina told me that he drained the tank, just like has been discussed. The little oil in the tank didn't affect the motor. He said you can use 87 octane, but no ethanol/alcohol in the fuel. Also, the higher octane you use, the better it will run and the better fuel economy you will get. | |||

Posts: 1769 Location: Algonquin, ILL | It's getting Harder and Harder to find Pure Gas ( No Ethanol or other Junk ) but that stuff won't hurt your motor other than you will need to check fuel lines more often as Ethanol can degrade some rubber. I have run 97 Octane in my Motor ( 2001 Merc 90hp 4-Stroke) from day 1 and it still runs like it's new, clean and quiet. As Far as Oil in your Gas Tank like the others have said Drain and refill with fresh gas, If you want to be extra sure drain, fill with fresh gas ( Only 1/4 to 1/2 tank ) pull the boat around the block a couple of times to slosh it around a little then drain and put the gas in your wifes car, re-fill and you should be good to go
