….reel? I’ve been contemplating buying a new reel for the 06’ season and am trying to decide between the Daiwa 253 and the 300 Luna. Has anyone use a “Medium” sized reel for musky fishing? From what I can tell the only difference between the two reels is the line capacity, so do you really need 245yds of 80lb superline, or is it more of a balance issue?

I don't use that brand specifically, but I don't see a need for 245 yards of 80lb superline (20lb mono). A typical long cast might reach 100 feet (30 yd) and with the way many of us set our drag, the fish takes some line, but would never be able to rip off that much to the point you would get spooled....if you did I would think it would best the world record.

I happen to use the Ambassadeur 6500 series of reels and have contemplated going back to the 5500. Smaller, lighter and less cumbersome.

i like a larger spool for certain applications.

it's not because they can hold more line (as pointed out, not that important), but rather because they have a larger circumference which means they pick up more line per spool rotation.
that can help make it easier to burn a bucktail or pick up slack on a jerkbait than with a smaller reel/spool.
consider the combination of gear ratio and spool size and try to match it to what you're going to be doing.

and i just put more mono backing on my large-spooled reels to fill the extra capacity up.

253 should be fine for you..holds plenty of line..as mentioned you only probably need to put 75 yards of superline on...use cheap mono for backing..i buy the cheapest "dicks sporting goods" 20 lb line I can find...

What I think you don't want are bass sized spools...mainly because you can just about spool all the line off on a super long cast...or maybe half..then the effective line you are picking up per crank is lower....

Stick with the musky sized spools and you'll be ok. Lunas look to be very nice.. For alot less money check out the Abu Records..all new drag system and new bearings ...I've heard good things.

I prefer a 7000 Garcia for just about everything. A long cast barely makes a dent in the spool diameter

i pretty much, only fish the bigger reels.
the Abu 7000
Shimano Calcutta 700.

but mostly,i use big, heavy baits that pull hard, and these reels make casting ALOT easier, even though they weigh more. the extra weight doesnt fatigue me as much as the extra work it takes to use a medium size reel for tossing and cranking in big baits.

i'd rather throw an abu 5500 C3 than a 6500 C#...but i'd trade both for another 7000.

Nick - I have used both the Avid AC250 and Abu Morrum 5600. No problems with line capacity, almost 100 yards of 80# on them. The only difference I notice is the levelwind disengages when casting, this is different than the larger model of both.

Wow, for a second there I thought Tomcat was starting to tell us that he was pretty?!!! Which would have been a whole other side to the dude that I haven't seen before, and would rather not see either . I've been using the daiwa luna so far this year and it's been great. It casts easily, even with big gloves on (been pretty cold so far, obviously) and no backlashes yet. Nice retrieval rate too and luckily I've hooked up with a couple nice hefty fish who fought pretty well and had good performance by the reel during the fight too. The handle on the reel is the best part by far, super comfortable reel. Even more than the Calcutta TE, although that's a good reel too.
