| I looking to buy a new rod and reel for throwing jerkbaits. I've already picked out my rod, but what I was wondering is what reel do you guys use to throw your jerkbaits with?

| Go with the 6500C4, with the 6.3 to 1 gear ratio makes it easyer to keep tight line while working the jerks.[:sun:] |

I like the Shimano Curado (6.2/1) for jerkbaits. It is a smaller diameter reel which makes it great for casting all day long. Plenty of line capacity. The gear ratio allows you to eliminate the slack line faster.
It is my favorite for Jerkos, Squirkos, Suicks, Bulldawgs, etc...... |

| Take Richard's advice. A 6500C4 retrieves slack the quickest and because of the relatively large spool the diameter doesn't drop too far on a cast. Either of the Shimano's recommended by the other guys will retrieve line much slower than even a 6500C3 because of their small spools.

| One thing to remember about the hi speed reels is that as speed goes up, power or torque goes down. Not one single thing you can do about it either. I prefer a little power versus the speed but that is just me. Something to remember however.

| I want to put another vote out there for the C4s from Garcia. I've used mine for the last 4 years, and although it feels as though it may be wearing out from the use. I like the fast line pick up and the castability is very nice.

| 6500C is the reel's that I like.
The 7000C is great for the bigger stuff with it's lower grear ratio |

| I'm using a 6500TCM its got the same bearings as a c4 but the gears of a c3 5.3:1 great durability(bearings) and nice cranking.and a really cool musky etched on the side. |

| Ditto on the C4. The faster line pickup on a jerkbait retrieve is a big help. But the higher gear ratio makes it a lot of work for other uses. |

| I agree with the last post, the C4 is good for Jerkbaits, but will KILL you on cranks or bucktails. Can be good for topwaters, at least the side-to-siders (Jackpot, TopPrey, etc.). DON'T make the mistake and get a C4 WINCH....my buddy Boro has one, and its so slow at 3.8:1 gear ratio I can't figure out what to use it for...

| Congrats on the C4, you will like it very much as I do mine. One thing to consider about this reel though that others have mentioned, it's a workout reeling bigger,deeper runnning baits. I put a powerhandle on it and am very pleased. Not only will it pick up slack line fast, its great for burning even big bucktails for an extended period of time.
I do disagree on the C4 winch being a poor choice, it may be yes for jerkbaits, but I have found it to be extremely effective with big and slow fall presentations,i.e deep diving, hard pulling crankbaits. One other place I like this reel is using sluggo's or other soft plastic twitch/jerks that require a pause before setting the hook. If you are as herky jerky as me on a strike, that little but of extra time it takes to wind up the slack and then "drive em home" seems to help here. I sold my 7000, which was bought for burning bucktails in summer and pulling in the big stuff in fall. I spent the money on a power handle for my exsisting C4 and a winch. I'm much happier now. Just my opinion, everyone is different.

| I'll have to find the post in the archives, actually think it was on MC but not sure. The info was great, the guy gave me the website and even the parts numbers. I went straight through Abu direct, couldn't find em anywhere else. I'll post again when i find it. |

I haven't contacted Reeds yet, but Abu Garcia got back to me today. They sell the handle (part# 22031)for $11.40 and the nut cover(part# 95495)for $2.76.

I also use the power handles on all my Garcias, and I like them. If you want you can get them directly from Garcia (part of Pure-Fishing). I suppose they cost at least as much there as they do from a retailer. The part number for the power handle you need is 22031. You can call Garcia service at 1-800-228-4272. They also have schematics for all their reels on their web site. Try this for more help (you'll need Adobe Acrobat to download).

If I remember correctly, when I contacted Abu through their site, there was another part, a screw that was needed, they knew the part number, I didn't write it down, hope this helps, good luck with your reels. |
