I`m thinking off buying a couple of new rods during the winter. I`ll be needing a jerkbait rod for throwing mostly gliders (manta,Smuttly dog, undertaker.....) i`m thinking about the Figrig 6,10h or 7mh in the toothtamer series. And a new twitch bait rod to throw Cranes 207-208 and Big game tackle 7-9 ,jake 8-10. I l`m thinking of the St croix Premier 70mhf. Bicouse i live in Europe i can`t try the rod`s or looke at them, so suggestions and comments are very apriciated. |

Location: Minnesota | Dear Heikeheimo, consider the Fenwick rods before delving into the st croixs. they can be viewed at www.purefishing.com simply select a country, and then choose Fenwick. The HMX and the HMG are both top notch rods, the difference is the HMX is the Im7 technology whereas the HMG is the standard from which ALL others are built. should you need any help please feel free to reach out to me. |

| if you dont want to go custom, I suggest the 8" H Fig Rig. Best 'stock' rod I have ever used. |

Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | I would also suggest getting a longer rod than a 6'10 or 7 footer.
I like to use 8 footers, and use Keith's rods from Professional Edge.
His custom 8 foot diamondbacks sell for $219 and at that price can not be touched.
No matter what rod you go with, I would highly consider going with a 8 footer. |

Location: Norway | Mike Hulbert and others: Why do you recommend longer rods? What are the plusses/minus' with longer rods. Im used to fish with a 6' premier, when throwing gliders in the 3-5oz range.

Location: Palm Coast, FL | Longer rods are better for longer casts, easier figure 8's, and better hook sets. You can make a pretty wide figure 8 with longer rods by going deeper and wider. You have more of a rod when setting the hook and also playing the fish...definitely get an 8 footer! |

| Shoot Keith an email. He'd be glad to explain the ins and outs of the types of blanks he uses. He's answered any questions I asked him before he built my rod. I've been told the edge series rods are a great rod as well. It's just not a Diamondback. |

| You asked if the DBacks were worth the extra money??
I don't have DBacks so I can' t speak specifically about them, but I do have several Figs and a couple of less expensive rods. Absolutely, positively worth the extra money. They are lighter, more sensitive and more comfortable than the cheaper rods. When you are fishing 8-10 hours plus a day, it makes a huge difference. After explaining the differences to my wife (fishes a couple times a year) and having her fish with the less expensive rods vs. the Figs, even she can tell the difference between them.
My 2 cents worth on customs?? Custom rods are great if you know what you want. What I mean by that is if you can walk into the shop and say I want x action in x lenght to throw baits in the x to x weight range with x pound line. If you don't know exactly what you want you will get a custom rod built to the specs of someone else. Personally, I myself couldn't justify the money for a custom at this point. By no means am I knocking anyone building custom rods. You just have to be able to tell them what to build for it to be your custom.

Location: Litchfield MN | Ok I have decided to go whit a higher end rod butt not custom`s because i can`t afford them. So i was looking in the web yesterday and found to rod`s for jerkbait the Figrig 6,10HM or the Lamiglass 7,0HF, can`t decide because can`t test them. Enyone tested them?? |

Blanks are RX7 Graphite.
The foundation for this graphite is “Intermediate Modulus / High Strain Rate” fiber (43 million) combined with a light fiberglass scrim. Then it is bonded together with a space aged resin system, this is a work horse. Blanks produced with this material offer superb strength, sensitivity, and a lighter weight strength ratio.

Why Custom Rods vs. store bought
Custom rods and quality rod builders test each rod individually ensuring that the guides are placed correctly. They do this by "Spine"ing the rod to find its natural backbone. Each rod has a unique bend and spine. This is because during the manufacturing process each sheet of graphite is wrapped starting in a particular spot. The starting and ending of the modulus graphite cause this backbone effect on the rod. Most manufacturers do not spine the there rods before putting on the guides. Improper guide placement leads to the rod twisting and deforming under pressure causing the line to touch the rod blank and poor casting performance. Everybody has a rod that when trying to throw a precision cast they know they need to aim either to the right or the left of it to hit the spot. This is caused by improper “Spine"ing on the rod. All the quality rod builders' attention is focused on the rod making it a higher quality than any store bought. Guide placement is also critical.
Why Buffardi rods are better than other custom Rods
Chris Buffardi is an addicted fisherman who travels offered him a chance of a life time when he decided to take a job down in Orlando Florida. There he met up with a custom rod builder that taught advanced lessons in rod crafting. After six months of training and numerous meeting with experts in the field, his time in Florida was up, so he moved back to Chicago. Chris continued builds rods of friends and family and now on a limited basis will be building rods to sell to individuals.
Wrapping skills
Chris has built numerous rods. His thread work includes patterned designs ranging from arrows to Thunderbirds, and all sorts of numerous custom layering patterns. For most custom rods he builds he keeps the patterns simple but unique. Custom thread work can take hours and even days for the complex weaves and multi dimensional patterns, so unless you would like to pay by the hour the design choices will be limited. The colors are always be picked by the customer.
