| Been toying with them for a couple of years now both crimping and tying using a swivel at one end and snap at the other. Started thinking about tying leader directly to line instead via double uni knot and a swivel and split ring at the other end, crimped and/or tied.
Anyone here tried this? If so, did/do you like it enough to continue with it?
I'm thinking of a couple of advantages: first would be night fishing. When you feel the "tick" of the knot hitting the first eyelet on your rod, you know when to stop reeling without ruining the first eyelet from a swivel (I know this is somewhat relative to the length of leader and to one's own sense of feel with the bait/rod combination) Second would be clear water (Unsubstantiated I might add...pretty crude experimentaion on my part). A couple years ago, I tried flouro in #130 @12" long and had more hits, but less hook-ups (more to my lack of getting a good hookset).
The other thing I was pondering was not using a leader at all. Using #80 powerpro, and we all know that stuff is very tough, and with most, if not all of "my" fish have never engulfed a lure to the point it is entirely in the mouth is there really much to worry about? I would think action would be improved too.
Thoughts anyone? |

Location: Algonquin, ILL | Steve: I may be Old School but I would NEVER fish without a good strong leader , Yup Power Pro is good stuff, it's all I use but tieing directly to the bait would be a big mistake as the point where the line would be tied to the lure and a foot or so above is the point that gets the most abuse getting pulled across weeds, rocks, logs, your partner etc.
Steel or Floro stick with a leader

| No doubt flouro will be tried again. That nail knot looks really good. I'll have to experiment with that one...

| Do not use Power Pro as a leader.
It may be tough, but as a whole the abrasion resistance of Super Braids is much lower than that of mono or floro.
Try running a knife over each once... |

Location: Racine, Wi | I am with the others, definitely use a leader. It only takes a quick corkscrew for the fish to get the line across a tooth, and bye bye fish.
That being said, I used to use floro rigs for sucker fishing, and noticed a very large difference in the amount of fish that grabbed the bait. I had some problems with the leaders breaking where the knot met the split ring on my rigs, and went back to 7 strand. I didn't get nearly the pickups with the 7 strand as I did the floro.
I think it can make a difference in some cases.
Note, the reason I was having knot problems is I used the wrong spool of floro and went with a lighter pound test, and I think it hit the split ring and cut the leader. So make sure to use the proper lb test for floro leaders.  |

Location: Athens, Ohio | As far as the night fishing 'tick' of the leader hitting the top guide, I got some glow beads and tied one of them to the line above the leader. The bead will stop the line even if you don't see it coming. Thanks to Steve Jonesi for that suggestion! m |
