Location: Chicago, Beverly | don't get a dell laptop, mines a slug and with how its setup should not be... get a desktop pc with a AMD athlon or pentium 4 chip, athlon I'd go with something at least 2400 or bigger, pentium about 2.2gig or so.. check out tigerdirects website if you can as some deals can be had there.. and the dell site can have some deal too once in a while..

Location: Davenport, IA | I had a 15" Compaq Notebook with a 2500+ AMD Ahtlon, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB HDD, ect until a power surge/lighting strike. Luckily insurance covered it (other than deductibe) My mom has a very similar notebook and has had no problems.
I now have a 17" Toshiba Notebook with 1.8 Centrino, Windows Media Center edition (VERY nice option, especially for watching tv), 1 GB RAM, 100 GB HDD, DVD Burner, ect. After a month I tried to turn it on and it didn't work. Motherboard was shot. Luckily warrenty covered it. Other than that I really love this computer, but my last one was great too.
I never have problems with spyware or popups. I use firefox. Don't use Internet Explorer. It is a terrible program. I just recently started using an antivirus. I had gotten a few visuses trying to download software for my PDA (stupid) I used the internet for 10 years without ever recieving a virus. You just have to be careful.
IME, Dell's tech support sucks. They have no idea what they are doing and always have to ask other people. Sometimes, they just make stuff up to try to waste time. I have a Dell PDA (Axim X51) and will not buy another one.
My brother has an Emachines desktop and we've had no problems with it. It is fully loaded for a low price. |
