Posts: 793 Location: Ames, Iowa | Last Fall on my last trip, one of my 6501s sometimes failed to engage the pickup after a cast. I mean that the handle just turned quite easily without re-engaging the spool. After a few turns it would then engage and resume normal operation. Didn't do this each cast- and sometimes I could give it a bit of a rap on the side plate and it'd work again. This is the one reel I did not take apart and clean and lube last spring. I've read you guys talking about pals going out. Do you think this is the case here? Thanks and Merry Christmas everyone! Don

Posts: 208 Location: North East PA , 20 mins from Chautauqua | It happend to me every year , I was told that it is always a problem with the left hand models ! I got sick of it and decided to upgrade to a 7001 last year and I havent had any trouble with it . It's a lot bigger reel but I got used to it . I would just send the reel to sportsmans repair or Bass pro reel repair right away before they get backed up ,It's normally about a 30 dollar fix if I remember right ? THE FERD

Posts: 1335 Location: Chicago, Beverly | not a lefty thing I don't think.. clean and oil possibly could cure it, or if that doesn't work, could be button is bent..not sure what garcia charges, but might be worth sending it in... just make sure you describe what its doing exactly..they should be able to take care of it rather easily

Posts: 1270 | This used to be rather common with left handed Abu's. They redesigned the clutch arm and position holder for the righties bit not the lefties about 10 years ago. Last year they finally redesigned the lefties as well. I would send the reel to Abu and have them put the new parts in it. Odds are that they will do it under warranty and have it back to you in a week or less.

I've had the exact same problem with both left and right hand models. Found a shop in MN (Angler's Trail ?) that fixed them for about $12. Didn't tell me what they replaced, but no problems since then.

Posts: 66 Location: Padova - Italy | Usually it is the wear of n.21432 part Try to lubricate your reel, try to fish and if the problem persist change or sssslightly bend this part until it engage properly in the gear. I’ve made this operations a lot of times for me and for my clients, especially when we are in some remote destinations. Posts: 358 Location: London, England | http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/timkelly/lasreel%20maintanence2.html This should give you a good start on what to do. If you've got a more recent C3 the little spring which is attached to the release arm no longer exists as they have a sealed unit built into the black plastic part. If you need to get a new release arm make sure you get the correct release arm as the one with the spring is different to the one without it.

Posts: 793 Location: Ames, Iowa | I just took the reel apart today and cleaned the whole thing, oiled and lubed too. Now the thumb bar pops back out nicely. Washers washed of any oil and dried. I have become familiar with this procedure as I've done it for my other reels. A few years ago I was convinced to open em up and give it a try. It's easier than you might think if you haven't done it yet. Be safe, be the designated driver, or just stay home...and have a Happy New Year everyone! Don
