What kind of wire do lure makers such as American hardwood turbo's use? Also is it possible to twist wire this thick without a machine?

I have replaced the wire shaft on Globes with Stainless Steel bicycle spokes. I can twist them with my looping pliers and a vise grip, but it is not as easy as making leaders.
