| i have a couple of shimano calcutta 400b's, i am curious where is the best place to send these puppies for an end of the year inspection/cleaning and lube up? i live in the mn metro. can you send them back to shimano for them to do this? |

| I use nothing but Abu Garcia reels....best I can afford.....and I send them to Bass Pro Shops.
I have sent them in for maint. and repair, and have never had to pay a penny.
I had 3 where the drags would slip. Sent them in for repair. Came back repaired and cleaned, and everything was N/C.
Gotta like that kind of service.

| I do all of my reel cleaning and repair myself. If you take your time, have a clean and open work area, and pay close attention during disassembly, it is not that complicated. The first few times you clean them it will go fairly slow, but after a while it gets easier. By cleaning them yourself you can learn a lot about your reel, such as diagnosing potential problems while your on the water. Nothing could be more frustrating than seing a 50+ monster and the reel holding that perfect toss back bait all of the sudden goes haywire. When you know your equipment inside and out this scenario can be prevented. If you decide to give it a try, avoid using harsh chemicals or cleaners. A mild dish soap works well with very warm water. When grease builds up I use a small soft bristle tooth brush and lint free paper towel or a cotton cloth to wipe up excess gunk. Do not overlube during reassembly. This will keep excess dirt from entering the inside and grease or oil will not bleed into your drag washers. I just bought a new 400b as well, but I did not see a parts diagram in the box. For the less experienced person this is a very helpful piece of info. I think a person could aquire the diagram by calling shimano or looking up their web site. Good luck. |

Location: N Illinois | I also do the maintenance myself. After giving Shimano $80 to fix and clean 3 reels last winter, and none of them worked any better, I do a better job myself.
I am sorry to say but Shimano's customer service has alot to be desired also. Needless to say, Shimano will not see another dime of my hard earned money.
3 Calcutta reels at $200 plus apiece. $80 service fee. 3 pieces of junk.

Location: Ames, Iowa | Do it yourself. 4 years ago I got the nerve to open one up. The first time you do this put the parts in a line in the order you take them off. Make sure you don't send flying the little clip that helps to hold the reel handle in place. Move slowly and look at how each part fits/orients to those around it. I videotaped this the first time I did it. But now I open up my Abu reels yearly to clean and oil and lube them. I use soap and hot water, soft cloths, reel oil, grease or reel lube, small flat and phillips screwdrivers, paper towels, qtips. You will learn a lot from this and you'll be glad you did it.
