| Just pondering this topic. Has it been dicussed before? Sure there is no flash but , the thump is still there. It can offer contrast if the body is a lighter color. Since bucktails are close to the surface wouldn't it be more visible from below, even at night? As a blade spins doesn't it almost appear as a solid structure, giving it the illusion of being larger? Or very simply has it been tried and failed? Or doesn't it have sales appeal? |

| Tried and failed? Not in my book. My old man has more confidence in a black bodied/black bladed spinnerbait than with any other bait. And he's caught a few on it when I haven't. There are some tackle makers that use black nickel, like Cat's Tails.
This fish was caught on the aforementioned spinnerbait.

Location: Sheboygan Falls, WI | Mepps still has black Musky Killer (French size 5) blades. They use to have black Giant Killer Blades, but sales stunk on those. I think that I still have a black Magnum (French size 7) blade or two in my box. They also have the Black Fury Blades as well.

| Steve I have used them and they work, try white body with a black blade for contrast. Many of my custom lures I have in a black/white zebra pattern. I was tossing your giant bucktails Sunday and my arm is still tired. Boy do they look great in the water, 13 inches of swimming magic following 2 inches of blades spinning!

Tried and failed never had any luck with Blk / Blk tails, I think this is odd as I do use other all Black baits
that catch fish

FSF, you are stating how it looks from above the water....the black blade blending in with the dark water. Be the fish, they are looking up with a light background(during the day) the black would really stand out in their world. |

| Since it is spinning and absorbing light I question your idea that it would really stand out, I think it would tend to be at best, kind of grey.
Doesn't matter to me anyway, I didn't like it, and no like=no confidence=no throw. |

Location: Home of the 2016 World Series Champion Cubs | I've got two. a Lil Eagle tail which has produced and a tandem blade something "cat" brand I cant recall. It runs opposite a white blade. No action on that one yet but it still sees time in the water. I too agreee its more the spinning/thumping thats going to work for you. Just my 2 cents.

Location: Avilla, IN | My favorite bucktail has a black blade. I have caught numerous fish on it. Unfortunately, this Gander Mountain model is not made anymore (it was discontinued at the local store anyhow). If I ever lose it I will be drowning my sorrows that same evening. |

| I have several black blade models, all of them ho-made except for the Mepps Black Fury which is a black French blade with flo orange dots. I have done OK on the black furies, usually in the spring when throwing smaller bucktails.
I have had better luck with black blades if I couple them on a spinnerbait, say a small flo orange Colorado and a big black Colorado, or a chart small Colorado w/ a big black Colorado.
And let's not forget the brass flaptail painted black......

Location: Black Creek, WI | As mentioned already, I think you don't see many on the store shelves because they don't sell well. CNelson's experience at Mepps seems to confirm that.
I'll admit, black is certainly not a "go to" blade color for me either... but I have a few blades painted black on one side and white on the other... and seem to do pretty well with them. I still feel the fist bite blades more for the "feel" than their "look".... but by painted contrasting colors on opposites sides... it enhances the "flicker affect" or as MRoberts would say... the Blinking Light appearance.
Also... I had plenty of Mepps Black Fury's (#4's) when I was a kid... and caught loads of fish of them. But... today I fall victim of what FSF said. No confidence = no throw.

Location: Pigeon Forge TN. | I have several bucktails with " Black Nickle" blades on them and in fact, some of them are b all black and have caught fish. I fish the river more than the lake due to time available for fishing these days.

| I think you can still get black/black perch Original Ghosttails. Meets all the requirements for an excellent nighttime bait. They ride very high in the water, even on a slow retrieve, so they're easy to work over shallow weeds in the wee morning hours. They are easy to work on the surface, too, "gurgeling", and the bait is still not moving faster than, say, a Topraider in first gear.. |

Leaves all of those fish that really like them for me and a few fanatics around here. I have one #5 Mepps black on black with well over 20 fish to its credit. Clear water works best but I have this one in my tounament box for sure. Try a little silver saltwater ( wide cut ) tinsel on the rear hook or just a white tip on the tail. A little Squirrel tail on the rear hook looks way cool. |
