Once again the C & R Musky Club has helped scatter plant almost 900 muskies in Lake Poygan (part of the Winnebago Lake system). This is the forth year we have helped. We are already hearing about mid 30" fish being caught.

Way to go guys, let us help you if you ever need it. We will be doing our stocking next year in S WI so I can't wait.

I will try to attend one of your meetings when I get back up there for work.

I know everybody here loves the pictures of great big fish that have been caught, but these are my second favorite types.
Those little ones are such a pretty fish.

Yes these are the great lakes, spotted musky strain. Originally from St. Clair area. Mostly raised by Wild Rose Hatchery. The same ones which go into Green Bay. The program in Green Bay has been so succesfull that they have been able to get the eggs from fish in Green Bay for 2 years now!

I was fortunate enough to give a GPS seminar to the Musky Club up in Fon du Lac last month. I heard about the 31" they've seen up there already. Amazing. Give this lake system an opportunity to be stocked and managed and I garantee you it will be a winner.

This is part of an email I received from the WIDNR this spring.

As to the current status of musky on the Winnebago system, that we are more clear on. We have been stocking moderate numbers of the spotted or Lake Michigan strain of true musky. This is the strain that was historically present in the system. Since 1998, we've stocked 426,550 fry and 11,686 fingerlings/yearlings into the system. The stocking appears to be working. Last fall, while seining for sturgeon in Lakes Butte des Morts and Poygan, we captured about 25 spotted musky in each of the lakes. They were all 29 - 30" long. Some had an LV clip. From the clip and the size it is likely that they were from the 2002 stocking. These fish were in great shape and in a year or two will provide some great fishing opportunities.

As to record musky in the system, the potential certainly exists. There is a good food base of sucker and other species, improving spawning and nursery habitat, plenty of water and low musky-specific fishing pressure. However, there seem to be more anglers fishing for them each year, and I hear of more caught each year. Only time will tell if the next state, line class or world record will come from southern, non-traditional waters.

Between the state and the great contributions and hard work of your club the Winnebago chain should become a great muskie fishery.

Great Work

Great work guys. It would be nice to have another good muskie water in this part of the state. Have any of the clipped fish been found farther up the Wolf? My fiance's parents live on the Big Cut by Barbers Landing and it would be real neat to see fish up that way. I catch a lot of good pike and bass up that way but have never hooked or have heard of any recent muskies in that area.

Derek,

My daughter caught a 29" spot ice fishing on Partridge Crop in February of 2005. If there was one there I am sure they are in the Big Cut/Cincoe area. Only time will tell!!!

I fish Cincoe a lot especially before muskie season opens. It would be a real treat to hook a muskie there.
