Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | Been thinking about the great season so far, and all of the personal bests that people have been catching this season that frequent these boards. I think it is so neat when a Musky angler takes another person out and they get their personal best. I didn't get nearly as much enjoyment this year, breaking my best, as I did when my buddy or wife did. A few of my friends and relatives were able to best their biggest this year, and I wanted to share my wifes and brothers personal bests here. They were so happy, that it is really quite hard to explain unless you could have been with them in the boat. I don't think the actual size of the fish ever matters, because as long as it betters their previous mark, there is reason for a certain amount of special/unique celebration. If they break the mark by a large margin(like my brother did the other day here in WI) it is even more fun to watch the joy on their faces, and a bit more celebration may ensue. Whether they catch it casting, trolling, on the figure 8(like my wife did), topwater, crankbait, Canada, WI, MN, it doesn't matter. It is a priceless moment that I personally love way more than catching a big fish myself. The stories are always cool and they are told over and over, and never forgotten. Tell me/show a picture of the personal best someone caught while fishing with you(I don't want to hear about your own), the happiness that was exposed, and the shaking/trembling nature of their voices and body in the afterglow of the ordeal. Posts: 330 Location: Pittsburgh, pa | I took a 13 year old out a few weeks ago. It was his 1st time ever musky fishing. Just 15 minutes into the first troll his rod goes off yes, just 15 min!). He gets a nice 35 1/2". After he calls every relative and friend he knew he calmed back down. 30 minutes into the next troll his rod goes off again. This time he struggled a little to land a fat 38 1/2 incher. He called everyone again. 2 fish in less then a hour. He now has the musky fever. He calls every day to see when i can take him. He sold his golf clubs so he can buy his own rod. He also learned how to net that day as i managed getting 3 fish later in the day. I got his pictures blown up for him. I think he carried them around for a week!!!!!!

Posts: 619 Location: Seymour, WI | I agree. The most memorable musky catches in my boat have all been with other people. When my wife and I first met, I wasn't sure if she'd musky fish with me, but she has been very lucky in the boat. She's caught several fish with an hr of launching the boat. The first musky that she caught was only a 34", but there was pure mayhem in the boat, lots of yelling and excitement until the fish was finally netted. Last summer I took my neighbor on his 1st ever musky trip. He doesn't fish much and the day started with me teaching him how to work a bait caster. As the day went on I caught several pike and bass but he hadn't caught anything, I could see he was getting frustrated with no action. About four hrs into the day he yells "I think I got one" I netted a nice 34" fish. He was all smiles the rest of the day. Grass,

Posts: 550 Location: So. Illinois | Great Topic, I agree with Mr. Worrell. I'd rather net a muskie for a family member or friend than the other way around, expecially if it is their 1st time out. I have been able to help several family members hook into their first or their largest. What a thrill. By the smiles you can see that size doesn't always matter. The 1st is a pic of my brother Jim during a day trip with Steve Cady -- we had a blast even though this was the only muskie we caught. THe second is of my brother Dave who's 1st muskie happened to be the longest ever in my boat even if it was a snake. the last is the largest in my boat being a stout 44 X 22 that my wife caught (even though she was having a bad hair day). Posts: 207 Location: Mpls, MN | Well this is my personal best but someone took me out and said we do it and we did. On the way up to the LOTW for a week long trip I was with TroyZ for the ride and as we talked he asked what my personal best was. Well it was a 36" Tiger (or maybe it was 38. I don't recall now). He said we'll get your best this week. And we did. To quote Troy on the trip here is the low down. 1- Witnessed a real life rat belly at the Get-R-dun by Cady 2-Low 40 class fish hot mouthing Lily Tail, set hooks, did you feel weight no, a little premature @#$!@# 3-Fish hits, stop reeling and givem line and gone 4-42" pike, mike turns and tell me he lost the fish, as it has slack line again and is swimming to deep water. 5-Mike is trying his best to get his Fig 8 up by me so I can see the fish, I tell him get it in the boat that is were I want to see the fish. 6-Mike gets his 40 inch fish I making a cast and I have to ask him if has a fish, total lost for words for the first time. 7-Have decent fish hot on fig 8, suddenly disappears, look back and mike has dropped his bait in to 8. 8- Have hot fish, make another pass she is hot on the candy knew she would eat, first turn no, second turn mike tries the stop in the corner with a spinner bait(anybody else she's gone), third turn smokes bait, Mike set hooks one hand on the forgrip and the other on the buts, Mike is showing me how to make a 40" fish tail dance for 20 seconds at boatside. 9-Mike again tries the stop n go 8, on a fish that is shredding his candy the last half of the way to the boat, he make a circle the size of a donut for the fish to turn, gone. Blew a lot of fish, took a lot of crap for it but I did stick a 40" muskie and a 42" pike. Total blast and Troy got me my personal best for a ski and a pike. Oh yah and I do have a new name from this, Blowfish. When I buy a boat next year that will be her name. One other thing. The first muskie I netted for someone else was that weekend else. Wasn't a monster but I netted Troy's ski and that was cool to be a part of it. Not his a personal best but was cool to net someone else fish and be a part of it. Last weekend I was on Vermilion with my sister and brother-in-law. A few weeks prior I took them out to learn how to cast a muskie rod. They did pretty well and I was hoping to see one them hook into a ski or a good sized pike. Would of loved to see them poop thier pants when we took a pciture.. But we'll keep trying and I really can't wait for that day I can see my sister hold a nice pike or ski and send that pic home to our parents. Posts: 459 Location: New Baden IL | Karen's 43 and 46" The 46 came first and is her personal best, but the 43 nearly whipped up on her only 20 minutes later. The 46 came to the net like a puppy on a string, but the 43 gave her 3 water clearing jumps and 3 line stripping runs. After the second long drag screaming pull she told me "you're gonna have to take my rod" If I did, she would still be hacked off about it! Still my favorite day on the water!! Posts: 224 Location: Madison | This guy whom some of you know has taken me out fishing here in Madison a number of times. He's never been to Canada before, so this June we hit some Ontario trout water for the opener. Conditions had been stable for a number of days, but there was a decent wind blowing water into one of the corners of the lake where I've seen some nice fish in the past. We drifted the shoreline, and as we got closer to shore the water went from crystal-clear to turbid, just filled with pollen and other debris. To make a long story short, I heard, "Fish on. . . BIG FISH! BIG FISH!!" and was lucky enough to not knock out the hook with the net. 54" and the biggest fish I've ever been around. -d Attachments ---------------- 54inch.jpg (38KB - 64 downloads)

Posts: 174 Location: Wis. Rapids, WI | Over the years I’ve been able to net a lot of fish for clients, friends and this year I was even able to net Norm Wild’s personal best a 51 ½-incher from LOTW. However, nothing gave me greater pleasure of netting my daughters three muskies. Her first was a 36-incher at 4 years old; the second came last year…38-incher (personal best) at 5 years old. This year I was honored again to assist her with a 34-incher at the age of 6. The smile on her face is PRICELESS. Posts: 1168 | This is a very cool thread... My tale is of my brother who basically got me into the sport. His time is limited as to when he can go out due to family committments while mine is not so where he was the teacher at first the time on the water has caused the student to be the teacher. 2004 he netted a fair number of fish for me while he tossed a goose egg up on the board. This season started the same way. Fished a lake he had never seen, I laid out a number of baits I suggested he use and he works through them with no success. I grab a bucktail he had just taken off of his line and on my first cast a fish is in the boat. So his frustration levels were continually getting higher but he was very supportive and in reality, we both look at it as a joint effort. I might have had those fish bite my line but without him in the boat it isn't as satisfying for me. Anyway...he fished a tournament in June with another guy and I was the judge boat. This was on a lake we fish a fair amount and he had yet to catch a fish from that lake. At about 11am I get a call from him and he is very excited because they had a fish. I find him on this lake and it ended up being a spot that I had discussed with him the night before. He was a fan of the spot, I really am not, but we sat down and put a plan together on how you would attack that spot along with many others on this lake. The fish he caught ended up getting third in this tourney but it validated all the work and effort he has put into this thing. He and his partner raised a few other fish that day all using tactics that he and I together worked through...so eventhough I wasn't there to see those fish or in the boat to net it for him, it was still better than any of the fish that I have caught myself including personal bests, multiple fish days, or just figuring out a pattern that works and works and works....plus with the check in hand it has relaxed his wife a little more so now she lets him out more often!!

But after watching daddy casting for muskies, he wanted to try. I threw out the surface bait for him, and he reeled in. Would have been something else if he had something hit. Maybe next time.
