If anyone is having problems with hook sets while using the Bucher Swimmin Joe, a friend of mine was, I came up with a solution that should work. I want to make up a small kit with everything needed to enable a 2" travel on the rear treble so that even if the fish has the bait secured in it's teeth, you will still be able to give a decent hook set. Is this something that anyone would be interested in?
Thanks
Rick
In case you would like to know, the "Swimmin Joe" isn't a Bucher innovation. It has been around since 2003 and is actually called a "Charlie Sr." from Megabait, inc. Got to love old Joe!!!

I for one am glad that the Swimmin Joe is not a good hooker. I had a buddy have a comerant grab his swimmin joe, but thank goodnes that the fricking bird didn't get a hook into it. It did however hang onto the bait all the way to the boat and then even refused to let go. Then the stupid bird wouldn't leave us alone, following us when we moved as well. I was ready to ring its neck!

I got a dozen soft baits that ranged from 1" long to 6" long from ICast about 10 years ago that look alot like both of these baits. There's alot of immitation that goes on in the lure business. Heck, the Top Raider, one of my favorite baits, really isn't anything more than a refined Mud Puppy. The key here is the word 'refined', I throw the Top Raider for a reason.

The Weagle is a variation of the Zara Spook, as is the Doc, the recon, etc. Bucktails are variations of the very old Spoon Hook design.

There are about a zillion variations of the Rapala and the Heddon. And the Amma Bamma? Lots of variations there, too.

I have caught several fish on Swimmin Joes and found hooksets no worse or better than other soft baits I use. It's no secret that the lures are similar to the Mega baits they are originated from. My question is why there is a sense of sarcasm in the previous statement about "ol joe". Pure Fishing bought Abu Garia and Fenwick and many of you have no problem with that nor the Stren line they own. 99% of lures are versions of past baits. NOT a big deal. The joes rock and catch alot of fish. Your missing out on a great lure if your not throwing one.

I have caught 4 muskies and 1 comorant(see muskie nuts post) on the swimmin joe. The fish(and comorant)hit the bait hard and hookset was not a problem except the comorant decided to grab the tail instead of the head and hooks!! Two of the baits were skinned of the rubber and all that was left was the plastic "skeleton". Gets a little expensive replacing the skinned baits.
