Subject: A Real Question

I'm deciding on my next reel and the affordable ($100) options as I see them are Abu C4 5601 or Shimano Cardiff 301A. I'm primarily looking for a faster retrieve than my C3 6501. If Abu made a D6 for lefties I'd consider the additional ten bucks but that hasn't happened yet. Should I consider others? Thanks...

i wouldn't bother with the Cardiff, get a corvalus instead.. The Abu should be good also.

Let's just say that if you are going to buy a Shimano, it better be the Calcutta. Trust me on this one!!

I forgot about this, someone posted in the buy/sell/trade area they have 7 lefty's for sale/trade http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/board/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=21... Might be a cheap way to get a couple reels.. If Shimano had a lefty Calcutta(I don't think they do yet), and you were willing to spend the extra to get one it would be a decent choice

Whatever you do don't get a D6. My friend bought one. IMHO better off with a C3,C4, or a C5.

If you are looking for a faster retrieve speed stay with a 6501 size at least. The smaller spool capacity of the 5601 will leave you with a much lower line level at the start of the retrieve and therefore a slower retrieve rate. If you want a real speed machine get hold of a BG 7001 HS. Great for bucktails etc.

I would stay away from the the Shimano's like Chad said. I've seen plenty of those blow up.

I would suggest two reels.

1. Tica Caiman CM 200, without a doubt the best $100.00 reel on the market today. I have used them all, and this one holds up better than any of the others, plus they are super smooth.

2. Gander Mountain 66, made by Pfluger, holds up VERY VERY well. Very impressed by these.

I love my 5601. Plenty fast and plenty of capacity. Typical bullet proof Abu.

I didn't say to stay away from Shimano, I just suggested that if you are going to buy one, make sure to get their higher quality reels such as the new Calcutta 400 B or the TE. They seem to have put all of their efforts into their high dollar reels, and not the cheaper ones!!
