I'm new to the board and curious what people look for when purchasing "Walk the Dog" type lures.

Size, Color, Profile, Hook Placement, etc etc.

was out last week and got this big tiger on a weagle, we left the lure hanging in its mouth to keep the sceptics quiet!

You have to try the H20 Tackle Recon topwater....cool bait, works well with short downward taps and it moves water....4.0 oz and 6+" long.

I'm still working with mine, but unlike the Weagle, this bait is very hard to push the nose down. Not a bad price either for about $20.00

The weagle is great, so is the recon. I really like the new 9" topwater from hoosierhandmademuskybaits. Click on kevin's link to inquire. It's going to be a big hit once people discover it.

Lucky Craft make a saltwater version of their Sammy. This bigger version is really good on pressured fish. They sell them out here by me for the saltwater guys. I know they would work good on muskies cause as it is, I get muskies on the 115 version. The Sammy walks the dog really good. Get ready for some industrial flushes

I use a baby Weagle, a Recon, and a Weagle, because I can make them dance without too awful much work, and all really move water. By the way, welcome aboard!

All you need is 1 Poes Giant Jackpot in Black/Orange bottom and don't waste more money on anymore. I'm all for multiple colors and sizes on bucktails and Cranks but you only need 1 surface walk the dog lure.

well guys the weagle does good but please check out don's baits on kevins link to his site. believe me all his baits kick butt. and his new topwater do push water and have a clacking wieght inside that is noisy. i tested a prototype of his topwater and lost a real big fish after throwing it for a 1/2 hr so i do say they work awsome... check them out....bill

ps thought i had a good hookset but didnt . the excitement of her engulfing the lure i got lost in all the excitement

New to the line of Musky Magic Tackle products is the Super Surface Slider which measures 7 1/2" long and is made of pine. What I look for is a lighter wood and it is tail weighted to keep the tail down and nose up. This creates a nose up action and tail wake. For this size walk the dog bait I like two hooks and the placement is one in the tail and one in the front half of the bait. As for the colors black has always been a #1 producer for me. Hope this helps.

or, you could try the "Double J" by Muskynightmare Custom Muskybaits. More affordable than most, and all the action.

Double J? I don't have one of those.

The Recon is the one I would hook on my line first.

You can't get a better made bait then one from H2O Tackle.

He would probably paint it in a special color for you too, if you asked. Roger is a bait painting artist!

Jomusky, The Double J was the first hard Bait I produced. I could have sworn I gave you one. Swing by the house tonight, and I'll hook you up.

Add HR Top Prey to the list. It's made out of heavier wood so that the fish don't push it out of the water when they try to eat it.

Rogers Recon is such a unique lure with its ability to actually dance in place without forward movement if needed. It can also be worked quite quickly with the reel handle and my wife likes its ease of use. I also like the Weagle, as it does seem to show big fish when things go sour for me. I like the amount of water that splashes when working it. I don't work it as slow as some suggest, but even on a quicker pace, it moves alot of water while walking. The super spook from Heddon is also a killer musky lure that isn't talked about much. Upsize the hooks and rings. Great river lure.

I agree with Beav........I've caught many fish, and BIG, on the top prey. I have one and it's lasted 3 years now.

Topwater- the first response says it all and the RECON by H2O rocks, don't forget the dancin' raider by Bucher for calm water.

Don't know that you can find a better zig-zag topwater than the Phat Boy. Effortless to work, great sound (PLOOP-POP-PLOOP-POP), bite-size, tight zig-zag for better hook-ups, good price. For me it has moved fish when other baits, including the Weagle which I had high hopes for, wouldn't. In general, Luke at Holcombe Tackle makes one hell of a great bait.

As you can see by the numerous posts, it all boils down to personal preference. Period. Most lures do. What I look for is ease of use, speed at which the bait can be retrieved, its ability to dance in place, castability (casts further than any lure I own = covering lots of water in search of active fish), and most importantly the sound. Buy a few (I've got about 5 - Weagle X 2, Jackpot, Mass Marauder, and a Phat Boy) and see which one you like best. They're just tools.

The Mass Marauder pushes a lot of water and will dance in place like no other topwater bait I've seen. Don't hear too much about this bait or hear too many people throwing it either...

The Weagle just plain moves water, and has great sound (SWOOOOOSSHHHH). However, it's a &^$*)*& to move quickly. Use it on BIG fish is what I'd say.

Jackpot... better options IMO.

Phat Boy great for the above reasons.
