Location: Des Plaines, IL | Does anyone know if your batteries need to be in a battery box with a lid or what the rule is. Also what else do they look for when they stop your boat?

| Here in PA they only check to make sure you have enough PFDs and everyone has a license. I've never heard of anything to do with the battery being in a box.

Location: Algonquin, ILL | Jim: Here in ILL and I'm sure in Most other States the battery posts must be covered. This is really easy to do and makes sense, just buy a battery box they are only a few bucks at K-Mart or any other store

Location: Racine, Wi | I got checked a few weeks ago, and the batteries had to be secured (tied down) and the terminals covered. Weather it is just the posts with a cover, or a lid for a battery box. |

Location: Kildeer, IL | I got tested a little while ago, and found the same as Tuffy. Batteries must be tied down, and the posts must be covered. You don't need a box. I didn't have a box, and they didn't care at all. |

Location: menasha wi 54952 | A good rule of thumb is that if your boat has an enclosed area that the battery goes into it will need to be strapped down and have the terminals covered. If your boat does not have an enclosed area the battery will have to be enclosed in an approved strapped down battery box.

Location: Kildeer, IL | Mreiter, As far as I know, that is not true in Illinois. My Tuffy doesn't have an enclosed battery space. They just sit on the floor under a shelf (half of the battery sticks out). My batteries are strapped down, and only have the terminals covered. When I got checked, the officers didn't have any problem with my batteries. |

K. Battery Covers: Storage batteries shall be provided with suitable supports and secured against shifting. Batteries shall be equipped with non-conductive shielding means to prevent accidental shorting.
