Location: nappanee IN | hey guys, i 've got an deck boat that a buddy gave me and it sat in his barn for about three years and i was told that the first thing i shoild do is to replace the water pump on the motor.
it's a 115 johnson - a 79 and i turned it over with no water going through it,not good right? anyways is it hard to change the inpeller? on this motor? thanks ..karol |

| With the weight of the lower unit, you may want to have an extra set of hands. Not sure if that year had a shift linkage or an electric shift. If you have a shift linkage, you will have to remove a bolt and nut to get the lower unit to drop off.
Either way, it should not be too hard.
Bout the only other thing I would do is maybe put a table spoon's worth of oil in each cylinder to re-coat things...Might be a little easier for start-up.
Then...fresh gas and fire away..

Location: Athens, Ohio | I'd check the lower unit lube, too, make sure there's plenty of oil and no water before it goes on a trip. I don't think you hurt it just turning it over dry, as long as you killed it once it hit. Check to see where it has a fuel or fuel/water filter and clean that out, then fresh gas. have fun, m |

Location: Eau Claire, WI | If the dude gave it to you, you are already ahead of the game $$ wise. Spend a $100 and take it to a good marine service center and have them give a quick check.
New water pump impellor.
New plugs.
Change lower unit lube.
Pre-lube cylinders as suggested. (If there is flash rust on the cylinder walls from it sitting without proper storage lubrication you may be in for a re-ring job in the future)
A 79 will be a carburated unit, you may need to have some cleaner run through it if it is gummed up.
If this happens to be a VRO unit, I would mix the gas the forget about the VRO (have it disconnected), or replace the VRO pump for sure. There were many of these that went down over the years, if the VRO pump goes down you will cook the motor.
Overall nothing major just to fire it to see if it runs, but I would have someone check the carburator adjustments, etc. to ensure you will have a reliable unit in the future. |

Location: nappanee IN | thanks guys, we have a guy in our club that used to be a dealer and i'm going to see if he'll work on it for me. deep and wide for my grandson and the wife to ride around in but not the best for casting off of, too many obstructions in the way,like seats and those pretty chrome rails ..oh well for the price it's ok ..karol
