Hey folks I'm taking a 4 day vacation in Vilas county the last weekend of July and want to catch a couple of fish, where would you go? I've talked the wife into a trip up north for our anniversary and she doesn't fish, not sure where I should start, I'm not looking for a trophy but rather to boat a few fish! Many of you know I'm a walleye guy and it's not too often I target this fish. PM me if your shy as I really need to get her to be my net person so I can spend more time in the boat! I like grandmas, Mepps #5's and Bulldawgs! Thanks in Advance!

Lots of places to go, where do you feel like staying?? Minocqua, Eagle River, Boulder Junction,........... many lakes and everyone has an opinion, why not consider the Rhinelander area?? I think if you do your homework you can put fish in the boat and the misses will enjoy herself as well. Shoot me an email, if nothing else I have a million ideas!:) Dave Jonesi

I second that, look at Rhinelander. Close enough for an easy drive to Boulder Junction or Minocqua, and good fishing, too.

Many, many places to go. At this late stage, you may have to search a bit to find open lodging on a lake of the type you want for the dates you want. Also depends on how luxurious you want the lodging to be. Minocqua area would be my choice. I'd fish Little Arbor Vitae for a great chance at boating a few smaller fish. Many other easy to fish 'numbers' type musky lakes in close proximity and many shopping opportunities for the misses available in town. Search for info on the chamber of commerce websites for Minocqua, Rhinelander, Eagle River, Mercer, and St Germain to get some contact info on resorts and lodging. Then start calling them to see if they have any openings left for your timeframe.

If you are going to be camping, go to Boulder Jct. Camp Holiday, in my opinion, is the nicest private campground there is. Top notch facilities. There is also so many different types of water up there. I think Lori and I are going to be up there around that time frame.

We will be camping and have no limitations as we will be fishing within Vilas county we will be on the water before sunup and after sundown, non-stop fishing for three solid days rain or shine! ! I want to hit at least 6 lakes. What would you consider to be a good lake when the sun is shinning, one for a cloudy day and one for a rainny day? numbers will be the main choice and I would like to spend the day on a quality lake like Crab for an afternoon!
Thanks this should be fun!
Good Luck

There is a state campground that is very nice and is located on the west side if Big Lake, west of Boulder Junction. Besides Big Lake, there are a "million" other lakes in the immediate area, that is to say within 15 minutes driving distance. Pick a direction, which ever one that you pick, you will pick the right one!
You may consider purchasing a Hotspots or Sportsman's Connection type of book that describes 100+ muskie lakes in a particular portion of the state. The books typically provide data on stocking history, types of fisherees available, landing locations, contour maps of the lake bottom, and a basic description of how to attack the lake to fish it.

Crab lake can be tough nut to crack. I would take a guide to learn it especially because of boat hazards.

Always wanted to hit Crab, but never did. If staying at Camp Holiday, you are within striking distance of lakes like Palmer, Preque Isle chain, Escanaba, Wildcat, Manitowish chain, etc. all good water, with WAY TOO many more to mention. Go there, Put on yer game face, and it will happen. My wife caught her first musky on our honeymoon up there last summer.

I think I'd suggest trying the Boulder Junction area. You have tons of lakes available and the town has a bit more of the quaint northwoods atmosphere. Not quite as hectic as Minocqua or even Eagle River although you're in a reasonable distance to make a trip to either if you choose. Wildcat is nearby which is a good lake for numbers and you might want to try Escanaba which is a really pretty lake (no developement). The Ballard/Irving chain is a short drive and known for good numbers too.

Thanks folks, I have fished the boulder Junction area, the eagle chain and like it a lot, I have cught and raised fish on Crab, Boulder, Palmer and others. I have always wondered about colors though I see many different opinions, If it's cloudy and a clear lake do I throw a black or white spinner, and when it's sunny on a stained lake what colors do you throw?
Thanks in advance and Good Luck
