I am seriously considering buying a Pete Maina Rod Reel Combo from Bass Pro Shops. I will use this as my main pole. The reel has a 4:2:1 ratio. I want to use this for mainly jerkbaits and spinners but will use gliders also. Casting only. It is $140.00 plus shipping. Is this a good combo or do you reccommend a different set? Newish to the game so talk to me like a 2 year old. Throw any advice out there. Thanks!!!!

Rods/reels are like cars, ford/chevy/dodge/import etc.. Talk to five people get five opinions. It depends on what you like. My preference is a higher gear ratio and am partial to shimano/daiwa I have a brand new jap model daiwa cvz I can't wait to spool, but my calcuttas are greta too. I go against the grain as far as rods are concerned as well. I see absolutly no need for an eight foot rod, but again preference. Find something in your area to go and feel before you buy is my advise.

I looked at the combo in Ill. the rod was 2 piece. If you look at the Pro's answers to there combo's you'll find some pretty good set-up's. But a good combo is different for everyone, just look at the multiple choices that everyone has. It take you some time to figure out what works best for you. Be prepared to spend some money....

Everyone likes different setups . I throw a 7'2" St. Croix with a 6500TCM for spinnerbaits, bucktails and topwaters. I use a 7' Compre with a 6500C3 for jerkbaits and heavier bucktails. This works for me. One bit of advice, for what it's worth, get the best you can afford. Personally , I like rods in the 6'9" to 7'6" range. A 6'9" heavy action St. Croix is the best heavy rod I've ever thrown. If you throw heavy baits (4-6 oz range) it would be hard to beat this rod in my mind. Matched with a good reel and you couldn't go wrong for heavy jerkbaits and big crankbaits (10" jakes, 9" grandmas, ect)

For what it's worth,

my first setup was a 6501 C3 on a 7' shimano compre rod, about the same price as the combo you are looking at. i think its a great all purpose setup for someone that is learning to use different kind of baits and techniques.

I have the 8' Pete Maina Combo and Love it. Its easy to balance and once you use the longer rod you won't want anything else. Personally I think guys feel they have to spend $500+ on a rig to catch Muskies. The fact is you can spend under $140 and have a great outfit and catch just as many... if not more!

The only comment I have is that 4.2 retrieve is a little slow for fast line pickup with jerks and glides. I believe you can get the same reel in a 5.3 ratio. That is a better balance for all around muskie fishing in my opinion. If you can't get that retrieve ration in the Maina reel, try the Pflueger Trion 66. It's the same reel made by the same people, but with more bearings. I have a bunch of them and they have been decent performers with no down time.

rpieske-this is going to be my main (and nearly only) pole and I want to be able to cast spinners with it also. Do you think I can do the jerkbaits and spinners effectively with the 4:2:1 ratio? I fear that the 5:3:1 would be too fast for grinding spinnerbaits. Thanks for the info!

Frosty-
i had a shimano corsair once with a 4-something to one ratio and and every time i went out it felt like my timing was off. i finally figured that it was the gear ratio was too slow. i think if you are only going to have one set-up you should get the 5.3:1. you should have no problem grinding!
