The totals were released and printed in the Vilas News Review. Wisconsin tribes speared a total of 179 muskies. The breakdown for local counties is as follows:
Vilas 68 fish on 74 lakes
Oneida 30 fish on 57 lakes
Forest 0 fish speared on 8 lakes

This yearly total is by far the lowest seen since 1992 when the tribes speared 165 muskies.
This is submitted purely for informational purposes and not intended to raise another anti-spearing controversy. Make of it what you will. Individual lake details should be available from the DNR or as printed in the Vilas News Review.

Do they have a breakdown of the exact lakes by county on the WI DNR site?

I haven't been able to find the listing on the DNR site. The total of 179 they gave is I believe statewide. The Vilas News Review only listed the totals for Vilas, Oneida, and Forest counties. I suspect you could find out info on other counties by calling the appropriate DNR headquarters for that county. If someone wants to know about a specific lake, shout it out and I'll give you what I've got. In general most of the lakes only had a couple of fish listed. The hardest hit were Big Arbor Vitae with 10 fish, Trout with 6 fish, and Big and Catfish with 5 each in Vilas. In Oneida Pelican had 6 fish taken and Squirrel and Tomahawk each had 4.

Low numbers speared is indeed good news, However I was wondering why the numbers are so low,
Was it due to timing? Lower fish population? Not targeting Muskies? or all of the above?

This is great news. 10 fish was the most taken out of one lake? That is nothing. A lot more than that are taken by hook and line every year.

Were the walleye numbers low also?

Walleye numbers were down a couple thousand (statewide) than in the past. 25,485 speared this year as opposed to 27,540 last year. The DNR spokesman in the article attributed it to the conditions this year. Water temps came up and the fish spawned within a short window.

It's slightly lower. The long term average is only about 225 muskies speared each spring. People make a way bigger deal out of it than it really is. On most northern Wisconsin lakes more muskies (and walleyes) will likely be harvested on opening weekend alone by hook and line anglers than were speared.

Pete, do you have the North & South Twin (both walleye and musky) totals?

and TFF (if available)?

Thanks

North & South Twin 1076 walleye 4 musky
Turtle Flambeau says O & 0 although they were on the list as a target lake
Kentuck 947 walleye 0 musky

There was quite a bit of Kentuck talk in the article. According to fisheries biologist walleye population is booming with their research showing 14 adult walleye per acre. This is due to tribal stocking that was done in 1999 and 2000 that was more successful than they expected. Statewide average for a self sustaining population is 4 per acre. If I'm doing my math right (always questionable) that still leaves 12 plus per acre on Kentuck. DNR would like to change the 1 fish over 28 regulation but will require a special review by the legislature and they can decide not to review it.

Good to hear the numbers overall are down, however I have a place on the P.I. chain and 315 walleye and a group from GB who fills two plus garbage bags of perch/walleye every ice season from V.V. lake and this is coming from only two groups who fish/spear this chain. I wonder what kind of impact this plays on my fishing experiences and when I want to harvest an eye or two every month.?

I understand your concerns and the winter/ice season is a whole different ballgame for those who don't know. It is largely unregulated.
