I'm planning on making a baby squirko by cutting the end off a baby jerko, gluing on a curly tail. and reattaching the rear hook farther up the body with a screw eye. This brings up two questions...

1) Has anyone done this and what advice/directions can he offer?

2) What should I use to glue on the curly tail? I'm planning on using a Mania Squirrely Tail.

The baby jerko is one of my favorite lures and I've always wanted a baby squirko.

Thanks in advance...

Yep, I can tell you not to do it, you will ruin the bait. It's been tried and the weghting is not correct. It won't work. Got that straight from the maker. One will be forthcoming just as soon as the weighting is correct. Slip-slider came out with a glider with a tail, should be somewhat siminlar to what you are after.

johnny b go to mike hulberts website, www.mikehulbert.com ask about it on his message board. mike has a buddy named shane who has tinkered with making some squirrelly tailed baits and might be able to give you a heads up!

You can cut the butt off, glue on your tail and install a 3/16 oz. bell sinker on the front hookeye and you will be very, very surprized!

I have a baby squiko that I created from a baby jerko. I have added the 3/16" bell sinker to the front hooks, but still fear that my rubber tail is too big/heavy. I have to do some more adjustment. Does not have the exact action it should. It’s definitely finicky when the tail is added and the weighting it critical. Here is a pic of my lure w/ my custom paint job.

I've got 16 in the works as we speak. I'll have one more batch before MN opener and that's it until fall.

Take that grub down to the last rib, don`t need all the bouyant rubber. I also went to a 5"grub too!

Shane,

Great picture! Looks exactly like what I am planning to do.

On the hooks, did you just add a new screw eye for the back hook? Or did you have to move both hooks?

What glue did you use for the grub body?

Thanks,

Johnny B

Johnny-
I added the back eyelet. I should have moved it forward and moved the front one up a tad. I believe the combination of my hook placement and grub tail made the lure rear heavy. I plan on moving the eyelet up and trimming more of the grub tail. For the glue, I just use super glue. I bought this stuff in like a nail polish tube. Just brushes right on. Prior to that I was just using super glue in the tube, works real nice.

I put two adult squirkos in a room with romantic music and candlelight. No results yet. Now that I think of it...how can you tell if you have boy and girl squirkos? I hope I don't have queer baits.

Sorry. I couldn't resist.

I agree with Handyman, use only the last ring of the grub to help reduce the boyancy of the tail. Putting a little lead in the tail section may help too.

Those big twister tails act like brakes. A thinner, less radical radius is the ticket. Treats gotter dialed in..........

Treats, I have thrown some of your baits! Nothing less than spectacular!

Here is my bait with the following adjustments. We will see tomorrow, what the heck this puppy does.

1. Added thinner but longer tail
2. Moved rear hook forward.
3. I'll throw it first without the bell sinker, if needed I’ll throw on a 3/16 trail weight.

Hi
I have Made several dozen Baby squirkos all made exactly the same. the problem is !/2 turn out ok and the others suck. some are gems.
I feel the main problem is they are to small to make consistant. What i mean there is not enough room for error or inconsistancys in all components. a gram or two will change everything.
Here is what I have come up with so far . You may have to make a couple to get a Great one
1-cut the center hanger off.
2- cut the back off 1/2" You will cut through the long Metal rear hook hanger use a hack saw
3- add 1/8 oz split shot in front of orig hanger 5/8" epoxie in
4- add 1/8 oz split shot in the back end where you cut
5- add new hangers (small screw eyes)
1 through the new lead in front
1 13/4" back from orig hanger
6- ad tail I always put my tails up on squirkos they just seem to work better. like the above post said cut the tail rings as short as you can to match the end of the lure.
7 -Hooks i use a 1/0 on front and a 2/0 in back to start.
This is the way make them.
I will be adding the additional hangers to the mold over the summer to try to put the baby squirkos in production. untill then have fun hacking
