I have a 16.5 ft 50th Anniversary Alumacraft Lunker LTD....It has a 40 lb thrust all terrain Minnekota trolling motor...I would like to upgrade...a couple of questions...How is the shaft length measured on a trolling motor? This one is 42in from the top of the motor housing (lower unit) to the bottom of the housing on top...Would it create any problems to use a 48" shaft...Any help shining light on my ignorance would be appreciated...thanks,
matt

I am by no means an expert, but let me add my opinion, if I may.....
I have a 16' deep v boat, that is very heavy, and has a lot of draft (sits very low in the water). I currently run a Minn Kota PD, With 48 pounds of thrust and has, a 48" or so shaft. This motor pulls the boat around like nobody's business. Measure from your top deck to the bottom of the boat. If it is more than 40", you have a deeper v than I do. I can set my shaft length to however deep I need it to run, and I don't use all of my shaft (no jokes, please). I'll take a pic tomorrow if I have time and post it.

I recently sold my Lunker V16. I originally had a 40 inch shaft on my trolling motor for that rig, but got sick and tired of trying to deal with bigger winds and the motor popping out of the water. Upgraded the shaft to 48 inches and had no problem. Definitely worth the extra money to get the longer shaft. 48 will do you well.
