| Hi All,
Fox News has (sort of) announced that all signs are Pope John Paul 2 died today at the Vatican.
I was reading something about how they deal with the death of the Pope, and among the things that need to be handled is the destruction of the Fisherman's ring which bears the deceased Pope's Seal. This is a recollection that St Peter, a fisherman, was given the responsibility to carry on the work of Jesus at the time of his death.
John Paul 2 will be remembered as a great leader in the church and had a huge impact on world-wide political developements.
Now the Vatican will go through a transition leading to the funeral of JP2 and then the selection by the bishops of a new pope.
Should dominate the news for a week or more. We were lucky to have had this man who was up to te task when called upon to do some great things for the world.

My fiance's uncle is the Pope's "right hand man"(AMERICAN ARCH BISHOP) and diplomat to the USA. Whenever you see the pope he is ALWAYS standing besides/behind him. Through many phone calls today back and forward from the Vatican...word is the Pope is still alive...but his health is declining fast.
I believe this report over any news report in the country...this is first hand info from a man who lives his life with the Pope.
I would imagine he will be gone in the coming days.

"Death Would Rekindle Unique Tradition
Should the pope die, word of his death may follow a unique Vatican tradition that spells out how church officials are to both determine and announce his passing.
According to tradition, when a pope dies, the prefect of the papal household tells the chamberlain. That official must then verify the death, which has been done by striking the pope's forehead with a silver hammer.
The chamberlain would then tell the vicar of Rome of the pope's passing and the vicar would then inform the people of the city." |

Location: Oregon | I have found it odd how all the news people talk like he's "past history" and yet the poor guy hasn't died yet. It does indeed look like his time is near but still out of respect for him I would think people would wait until he is gone before talking about his legacy and replacement...kind of strange.

I think that's what I respected about him the most, he was a man of peace. It was said, any time you have the Pope and the Dixie Chicks against your plan, you'd best re-think it! m |

| He was truely a great man & a great leader. I was never impressed by his stance on war over the years, but after learning about his experiences growing up in Poland, I can certainly understand how he came about believing the way he did. It's easy to take a stance for peace by speaking out against war, he went much further. The video footage of him in the prison cell, forgiving the man that shot him...this man truly lived out his convictions. No mater what your background or faith you must be impressed by a man that commited to his beliefs.
