Location: Elkhart, IN | Does it matter how heavy of mono you use for backing on your reel? Say you use 12# mono instead of 30# mono would you lose any strength of line on a big fish, or is the braid once locked into place with the mono pretty much self sufficient? I guess the real question is how much stress is put on the backing?

Location: oswego, il | No stress unless you take all the superline off the reel. 12lb is fine. I actually use 4 or 6lb becuase it packs tighter and harder on the spool. |

| I use 30 lb mono, but the lighter stuff packs tighter. If you go lighter, just use more superbraid |

Location: Kalamazoo | Funny I just had this conversation with Hulbert last night. I think he said he used 8lb, packs tighter to the spool and there is not tension anyway, so light line is fine. I use 30lb to fill up the spool, and then add my Tuff line. I like the idea of the spool packing tighter, so I think I will use a lighter next time I spool up. |

| If your backing is the same diameter as the super you get a better connection. To me puting 8# mono to 20#diameter super seems way to dinky of a connection. I beleive with that light of backing can lead to errors, I have never had any problems with 20# mono backing and can wrap it as tight or tighter then say 6-8#. |

Location: Chanhassen, MN | I've used 30lb but also try to match line diameter with the super braid. I use 80 lb power-pro.
Maybe I can use smaller diameter. Also make the connection with a blood knot. Also heard about others using electrical tape and tying the power-pro direct. What have others used ?

Location: oswego, il | Handyman, I put on about 75-80 yards of superline on my reels. If I get to the backing for it to become a problem, my boat partner will have some lumps.  |

Location: Chicago, Beverly | I use 36lbs Musky Master for my backing.. never had a problem yet. I only use mono for backing when using the superlines on my bait catching combos..I mean Bass catching combos... |
