Posts: 462 Location: Madison Wi. Chain | My kids are starting to get into fishing with me. They are old enouph to start casting on their own. I am wondering what kind of rods, reels and line other use. I have a couple of older reels with a thumb bar, but I am unsure what kind of line to put on, any ideas? BG

Posts: 1046 | At 7 years my boy and girl were started out with Curado`s with 20# mono and a heavy bass flipp`in stick. By the end of the first season they were both using standard musky gear! Only thing that sucks now is I have to get triples of EVERYTHING! They really learn fast at that age, priceless!

Posts: 1137 Location: Holly, MI | My 7 yr old (now 8) was dying for a baitcaster because I had so many. I bought him a shimano and put 30 lb power-pro on it. He practiced in the yard until he got pretty accurate. They Do catch on fast if they want to. The power-pro and others like it won't tangle as bad as mono imho. I put him on a fairly stout rod so he can handle anything with it. It is overkill for small bass etc. but he is ready for a monster, just ask him.

Posts: 1046 | You are right about the mono, but I looked at it this way, in the beginning it was cheaper to cut/fill with mono until they got the hang of it. Also this has been years ago as the superline thing was just coming of age!

Posts: 829 Location: Maple Grove, MN | My soon-to-be five year old daugher wants to go Muskie fishing this year and I plan to set her up with a heavy Bass type rod and reel combo and a 50 lb high-vis superline. I'm thinking a 6'6" rod should be plenty long for her and the reel just big enough to hold about 125 yards of 12 lb diameter line. There are lots of combos available like that for about $100. That's what I plan to get anyway. The tough part will be when she starts outfishing me just like she does for Northerns and Sunnies already.

Posts: 185 Location: Pound, WI | I stopped at Gander on the way back from DeForest on Saturday to buy a reel for the rod I picked up there. After talking to the guy behind the fishing counter, I bought a Zebco 733. It's a pretty heavy reel spooled with 20lb mono. $20. I figure that it's a way to get my 5 yo out without having all the backlash. When he gets the hang of casting, I'll give him a 6500 to try. Brian

Posts: 427 Location: Wausau | Last summer my 3 year old boy liked to just push the release bar, let the lure fall, reel it up and twitch it now and then. I set him up on a 6 foot pole and 6500 Abu using Tiger tubes or med bull dogs. Since he was only three I used a rod holder to make sure a big fish wouldn't pull the rod out of his hands. He did hook up with two fish - one nice notheren and another 20+ musky. He had a blast. I'm sure I'll start doing the same again this summer. Maybe throw on a creeper and cast it out so he can reel it in... Edited by agrimm 3/15/2005 9:21 AM
