| Homer Leblanc would catch muskie on chicken bones, forks and such to show that the fishermen caught fish not baits. Does having a lot baits mean you don't have as much confidence in your ability? Or do you think it gives you an advantage? | |||

Posts: 341 | It keeps us going when all else failed just tie on another lure and a new game begins. I think it's comparable to the one arm bandit frame of thinking. The next cast it's going to pop or if I try this machine (bait). We all have gambler traits in us. The Doc has left the building.

Posts: 1996 Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | I don't know if its because of more confidence in my ability or the fact that I am sick of carting around all those baits. I will reduce my bait selection in the boat by about half this year. As a matter of fact, I think having too many different baits is actually a bad thing, you are not intimately learning the subtleties of each bait and working them to the best of its ability. The different variations of my CONFIDENCE baits will be the mainstays in my boat this coming year. If I find myself wishing I had a certain bait with me I will dig it back out of the basement. I think I am done looking for the silver bullet of baits that will trigger them all.

Posts: 743 | I think more baits equal more advantages (but to a diminishing point, not forever). Just because you can catch muskies from the shore doesn't mean owning a boat is over doing it. Sure, Homer caught fish on chix bones on St Clair...heck, back then (and now) you can catch muskies on st clair w/ a bare hook..just troll it fast enough. that's a fish factory. you catch muskies on LSC w/ a pair of underwear and hook. Why do i think it's an advantage? have you shared boat w/a guy and he gets all the strikes? then you put on the EXACT same lure and you start getting action? happens to me quite a bit. I have seen sereral times when me and partner are throwing same bait, different color and one gets all the attention. switch to the "hot" color and action equals out. Same as size too. i have been in my baot when i'm throwing a 8" glider and i'm getting all the action and partner has on same color but 6" and no action..he switches to the same bait i have, action equals out. I know alot of guys like to throw around "new paint jobs and new baits catch fisherman, not fish". i agree somewhat with that. yea, you can fish all year long w/ black suick and catch fish. But when they (the muskies) prefer a different bait, dont you want to be to up your chances of catching a fish? THere is NO doubt that lakes have bait preferences. some baits get really hot and others cool off. that is a fact of musky fishing. i have seen it too much for it not to be true.. so, when they they are going on Yellow/Green Magic Makers and not Crappie Phantoms...dont you want tht Green/yellow Magic Maker to toss your self? Trollers should be able to attest that color preference does happen when trolling too. in a day of trolling, catch 5 fish and all 5 came on the same bait, even though you're pulling, 2, 3, 4, 5 baits all day long. Having more baits could give you more confidence in your ability to catch fish when you see bait preference happing right in front of your face. i dont think having more baits lesses your confidence in your ability to catch fish. that's like saying "does having a brick house make you more scared of dieing in a tornado than living in mobile home". i dont think living a brick house will make you less confident in your ability to survive a tornado, but really, helps you be prepared for the day it comes. Bring the baits!! bring 'em all. tomcat

| More baits give you more options. For some people that is a good thing and for some people that is a bad thing! | |||

Posts: 686 Location: Tomahawk, Wisconsin | I stick with the 10-20 baits that fit in my lexan holder on my front pedestal. Very seldom do I stray from these baits as I have a good selection of different types of baits for the body or bodies of water that I am fishing that day. Usually have the Lakewood with me that is just in the boat taking up room, although it almost makes the 681 deck from fore to aft!!!!!

| my approach this year is to have my basement pegboard serve as my "tacklebox." i plan to simplify lure selection by filling only one softside bag with 4 plano bins (approx 30 lures) each time i go out based on the conditions, location i'm fishing, etc. for longer trips...load up the kitchen sink of course since it's harder to predict what you'll need. | |||

Posts: 169 Location: Pewaukee, WI | I have all 3 large boxs with me in the boat, plus a bunch of smaller plano's. To start the day I select enough baits to fill the clear vision tube storage system at the base of the seat in the front of the boat. This is usually 6-8 baits, and I try and stick only these for the day and resist the urge to bust open the large Lakewoods. I hate leaving baits, rods, etc. in the truck or at home...invariably, something breaks, or I loose a lure and it's sitting at home. (So why do I buy more baits, and plan score more this weekend at the Muskie show, that I dont have room for???...perhaps therapy would help)

Posts: 392 Location: KY | I agree with most of you who say that all you need is a dozen or so baits for a day of fishing. The problem is, knowing which dozen. I am lucky if I get to go two weekends in a row. I am very lucky if I get to go two days in a row. This makes it hard to predict what patterns are working. Especially when you take into account seasonal changes, frontal changes, and water conditions. If you fish every day, no problem the conditions are not going to change that much. Until I know what the conditions are and what the fish are doing at the lake I will be fishing, I will bring every bait I can reasonably carry. Bruce

Posts: 600 Location: West Bend, WI | Thats why I try to bring one of everything to cover my bases.I grab about 3 lures that I think will be the right ones then I grab a few more to fill in for what could be happening.

Posts: 20281 Location: oswego, il | I take alot of baits with me but may only use 5-10 max on a given day. Being able to pick those 10 from a bunch of lures is an advantage. A nurtral fish might not flick it's tail and travel 15 feet to hit a lure but may very well hit a lure that you were able to work 3 ft away from the fish. I am a believer in getting the lure closer to the fish. Sometimes a matter of a couple feet can make a difference.

Posts: 572 | Although I may only fish a handful of baits on any given day, having a lot of baits to choose from helps when there is a change in the weather or lake conditions. Of course, favorites usually gives a person the confidence to work the lure properly. Having 30 to 40 lures is NOT a lot of lures when one considers all the lures and color combinations to choose from. And, having a lure in more than one size helps. Muskie Bob

Posts: 212 Location: Madison, WI | I have lures that I will throw depending on the different weather conditions, some for different lakes. Some I will only throw shallow, others only for deep. I have trolling only baits. I may start out with a plan but until the fish tell me I am doing something right, I can't rule out anything in my arsenal. If I don't have it with me, I would be like a hunter with a gun but no bullets and a 10 pointer is looking right at me.

| I would love to see the day when one lure type or lure color just slays the fish! I believe if you can work a lure and put it near a fish, then you may get bit. Speed and depth come after location; following a long way in to the rear are color and action. At least in my experience. I still buy lures because I like to buy lures. I am a manufacturer's dream. | |||
