Subject: Manitou Question

Hi guys,

Just back from the All Canada show here in Madison, talked to Tammy Gravdahl at Barker Bay Resort on Lower Manitou. Told her that on our way up to Cedar this summer, we wanted to stop in and scout out her camp for a potential 2006 trip, and she told me about the logging road and the 18 mile trip through Esox Lake, so here's my question....

Has anyone here ever been on that logging road? How difficult is the 20 mile drive? It's mostly a gravel logging road if I understand correctly. How brutal is the drive? (I've been on the road to Dryberry before, and have absolutely NO DESIRE to do anything like that again!) Tammy mentioned something about providing their guests with radios to monitor the traffic of the logging trucks at specific mile markers along the road. Anybody here done that before?

I'm not at all concerned about the 18 mile boat trip, because I have all the topo maps as well as the GPS co-ordinates of all important reefs/hazards. We just don't want to destroy ourselves on the way to the Esox Lake landing.

Any info on this logistical aspect would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Went to Manitou last year with some friends. Barker Bay and Tammy were great. The road is not that bad. I would suggest though getting a rock guard for the back of your truck. Saves a lot of dings on your boat. I did not see a need for a radio to monitor the trucks. Just take it easy going down the road. The last mile or two was a little more primative but all you have to do is go slow.

Manitou was a great wilderness muskie fishing experience. Can't say we didn't see anyone, but for the most part you could fish wherever you wanted. I'll go back again. Some pretty awesome water to fish.

Yeah the loggers can be reckless, I was riding with a taxi cab driver from I falls and just about got creamed, there was some swerving and fishtailing going on , but that was a single episode, and the cab driver was driving too fast also. I make 3-6 trips in and out the road every year for the past 8 years , most of the time it's fine , plenty wide in most spots , just drive defensively and remember it's their road. if I wanted to fish the manitou I would'nt let the logging road be the reason that held me back. Bright sunny weather for a week with dozens of follows and no hookups well that's a whole other story! It's a beautiful lake , very little pressure, and holds some true monster fish. Our cabin is 8 miles north of their place . Good luck ManitouDan

Thanks for the responses guys!

David S. - This is probably a stupid question on my part, but what do you mean by a "rock guard"? Would that be somehting similar to mud flaps? I've never heard that term before, but I'm assuming we're just trying to prevent flying gravel from hitting the boat. Please elaborate if you can.

Thanks,
John
