Posts: 89 | If a bunch of first time wanna-be muskie guys are planning a trip, where would you recommend? LOTW or Eagle - our group was set to head to LOTW and someone said it's too big, too tuff without a guide - that Eagle was more manageable. Any thoughts?

Posts: 1996 Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | If you are looking to catch fish and have a shot at a good one I would recommend LOTW. It is big but you do not have to fish the whole thing in a week. Take a small section and fish whatever looks good, chances are it is. On an average day on LOTW you will catch musky. If you want a trip to go out after a pig, go to Eagle. I have been up there and gone all week without boating a fish however. The fish grow to giant proportions on Eagle, but are much less likely to eat. It does not fish a whole lot different than LOTW as far as size of the water goes.

Posts: 2427 Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | If you really are a bunch of newbies I would go to Eagle and the surrounding lakes. For example if you stay at Andy Myers Lodge, you are offered a fly in one day. These lakes are know to produce catches in the high teens, and people catching 25+ in a day is not unheard of either. After you land a bunch of fun, action fish, you can then go to smaller lakes around the area like Indian and Canyon. These lakes are well known for producing 40 inch with with plenty of 45+ inchers swimming around in there as well. Finally you can put your skills to the test by chasing some monsters around. The best thing is, you don't even need to leave Vermillion Bay to be in HAWG HEAVEN. Andy Myers Lodge offers you the best of both worlds, action, numbers, 40+ inch fish, then the EAGLE HAWGS. check out http://www.andymyerslodge.com, or give Herbie a call.

| Go to the NW Angle of LOTW. You can spend a week fishing everything that looks good and not have to motor very far. | |||

| i have been going to Canada, twice a year, for the past 7 year. i have fished LOTW 8 or 9 time. eagle and surronding lakes 5 times. There is a very very very good chance if ya'll go to Eagle your group (yes group, not just you) but your group may catch zero or 2 fish for the week. sure, you guys can cathc 10 or 20..but...i doubt it on Eagle. that is musky reality. someone might catch a 50 plus incher too. the fish are alot fatter/thicker over there than on LOTW, but really, more 50" fish caught on LOTW than eagle. anyone who can cast a bucktail or topraider can and will catch muskies at LOTW. LOTW is MUCH MUCH easeir to fish without a guide than Eagle. much easeir. I have never hired a guide there and we always catch fish. If was was guessing, i'd say you'll catch 4 times as many muskies at LOTW than eagle. i have spent 90% of my time around the Eagle lake area on Eagle Lake, not the other lakes. so i cannot speak for the action on the other lakes, just Eagle. eagle is not a good place for 1st timer. LOTW is much easeir to fish and more consistent action. if your group are seasoned musky anglers with hundreds of releases already, looking for a 40 pounder, Eagle is good place to try. but if you are looking to cast for muskies up to 55", LOTW is great. they are not as fat as Eagle fish, but you guys wont know the difference. Posts: 2037 Location: lansing, il | thats the nice thing about herbies place you can fish eagle, or go to any of 5 or so area lakes where he has boats set up for action fishing!! without having to hire a guy to do it. his place gives ya lots of options. but yes i will agree that you can fish eagle for a whole week with or without guides and have some very good results or some pretty poor results. but your usally garanteed action on alot of the other area lakes! | ||

Posts: 202 Location: Angola, IN | Another consideration is money. If you have deep pockets, then no worry. Staying at AML is really nice (from what I've seen and heard), but like many said, there have tons of people who fish Eagle all week and don't boat a fish....which would stink if you're new to the game. But like Mike said, if stay at AML, you can go to one of those numbers lakes (I think it's included in your costs at staying there). But on LOTW, it's cheap to stay there, and no need to travel anywhere. People who can barely cast should be able to move and catch fish. Bucktails and topraiders are the ticket too (easy baits to work). Plus, it's stained water, not clear like Eagle. Either way, you'll have a great trip.

Location: Athens, Ohio | http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/board/photos/photo-thumbnails.asp?a... check out this link. There are NO big fish at LOTW, at least in Sabaskong Bay, and I only caught 10 fish the whole week. m Edited by mikie 1/12/2005 1:12 PM

| I have been to LOTW the last 3 years. Each year I have caught numerous fish with at least one over 40" each year. 2002 = 43, 42 2003 = 46.5 2004 = 47.5, 46 I love Lake of the Woods. Very, very easy to fish. | |||

Posts: 1245 Location: Madtown, WI | I would lean towards LOTW for the beginner...HOWEVER, like Mike said...numbers are nearby (I mean 10-20 minutes from Herbies/Andy Meyers Lodge) drive time... Eagle is tough...Spend a week there 3 years ago I think....I didn't get a fish (some my error..but don't want to talk about it)....however, I netted 2 50+ inchers...the same day....that trip.... Last couple years I have gone over to the action lakes either after dinner or for on a day we thought it would be really tough on Eagle...group caught quite a few fish...and some decent fish on those action lakes too! If you want a GREAT resort with great people with a chance at a monster (or at least seeing one) and then various types of water nearby (clear and stained) Go with Herbies... Don't have all my personal records in front of me but...My eagle trips..: 2004- (tough cold summer trip)...34, 35 and a 52 2003 -52, 46, 44, 42.5,39.5,36.5,33, 32 forget the previous years details...but witnessed and netted and caught some nice to BIG muskies... People will put up some BIG numbers of fish from LOTW....and some big fish as well...Depends on what you are looking for....I have personally seen muskies up to 57 inches on Eagle...keeps me going back! Just went back and forth with Herbie today in fact locking in our trip for this year! Cory

Posts: 36 | Go to LOTW. Just break down the lake into smaller sections, and fish each section as a separate lake. Get a good map, refer to it often, be careful, and fish hard. You will catch fish. You will probably see a bunch of fish. I guess I would recommend the NW Angle, but Sabaskong is great too. Plus, LOTW will generally be cheaper. Whatever destination you choose, you will have a great time. Nick

Posts: 342 Location: Passaic, NJ - Upper French River, ON | LOTW - WALSH'S BAY STORE CAMP First time at LOTW we spent one day with Frank and he showed us around, and helped us with a milk run. We got 48.5" and 43", many pike, and walleye. Nothing like travelling a long distance and hitting the ground running. Can't wait to get back. While talking to Frank to book the reservation, I got a 49" trollling - I'll be calling him lots.

Posts: 1310 Location: Washington, PA | I've never been to LOTW, I hope to make it this year. That being said, I've seen some things on eagle, and that's the reason I KNOW I'll be on eagle at some point this year.

| I personally have decided not to decide so I am spending a week on the Northwest Angle and a week at Eagle this year. I have been going to Eagle for the last 5 years and simply cannot choose to not go to this lake every year. I know the trophy potential and it is not an easy lake - but there are some real jumbos in there. That said, I know LOTW is good too for more numbers - but I would have to bet that Eagle will produce a true long, heavy fish. 2 years ago 2 different people in a 3 day period boated 56" fish and I have seen the pictures - I want to catch a fish like that. Also, unsure of if this is different on LOTW, but Eagle has never had it's musky population stocked and at the same time watering down the gene pool. All natural reproduction which I think is quite cool! Hopefully by this time next year I will be able to fully give an answer as to which would be the better lake - but I still think I would not be able to make a choice then either! They are just 2 great bodies of water worthy of your time! John Flannery | |||

Posts: 167 Location: Girard Pa. | Like most have said here, both are great bodies of water,I personally have not fished the LOTW ,The tourist Fish on eagle keep me comin back.If eagle is not moving fish there,or its blowing ,there are several numbers lakes within a 10,minute drivethat offer fish up to 50"class..Ceder lake is 30,minutes away ,which in my mind is trophy water, and easy to fish...I'm not sure if you can get away from the wind on The LOTW if she realy decides to blowAll this being said ,Time of the year, should come into play also, as to which place you decide on..You can't beat the hospitality at herbie's they will mark maps for ya ,no secrets there..JMHO ARTIE
