| cedar lake, november 30 of this year. We had all but given up after a day or working suckers on the windy structure, in fact we were within 100 yards of the launch. My partner Brad had already retired his sucker and I was holding out for sunset. As we moved towards the launch, the sucker was deep, down maybe 10' over a steep 18' breakline. he started to get PMS, "pre musky syndrome" and was getting nervous. Shortly thereafter the clicker on the 7000 starts a methodical march out to open water. We worked hard to try to position the boat directly over top so I could put the wood to her, but she kept on changing directions so I just let her run for what seemed like minutes. When I did strike, it was with everything I had, seeing as the season end was 24 hours off, I didn't want to lose this one. I stuck her, nothing. no movement, no head shakes just a straight course to deep water. I could not turn this fish so we set off after it, I felt like yelling" she'll never take 3 barrels" ala Jaws. constant pressure, nothing. Change of direction and angle of attack, nothing. just kept swimming away. This went on for at least 10 minutes, knowing full well I had my largest fish on, needless to say I was getting a little nervous. FINALLY, after a few hard runs, she's coming up broadside just off the bow, rolls up, lays on her side for a full porn star shot and then throws the sucker back at us in disgust. Add insult to injury, the #*^@ thing sat on top for a good 10 seconds before making haste. Having just got back from LOTW and seeing numerous 48", and landed a very stout 49" I am very comfortable saying this fish was 52-54", well into the upper 30's and likely well into the 40's. There's been just over 100 fish landed in my boat over the past 2 years, nothing anywhere near the size of this fish. I'll attach a couple of battle shots my buddy took, while I was yelling for the net! | |||

| C.Painter: Ya that one still hurts. I wrote that for Jim, the guy I was fishing with. That truely was a once in a lifetime fish. I remind him of that all the time. I also remind him even though he blew HIS chance that I still have mine. He doesn't find the humor in that, go figure. This whole post is cool because its more then the one that got away. Its really about the one that messes with your mind at night. Its hard to believe that a fish can do that! Right Ahab? | |||

Posts: 929 Location: Rhinelander. | The one I lost several years on chattaqua, in N.Y. Was showing a bait I had just made to Tony and Paul and this pig came straight up at boatside and out of the water with the bait way down out of sight. I swear she could have swalloed a volleyball. It broke my line when it hit the water. Found out shortly after I had a cracked guide that cut my line. This was the fish of a lifetime!!!!!!!!!!! there were other people close by that saw and everyone said it was the biggest muskie they have ever seen. All 4 of them that saw it have caught 50's and said this was easily bigger then a 50. HOW MUCH? Hell I don't know and I still see her in my sleep and wake the wife setting the hook. It was just huge.
