I saw this mentioned once and heard about it some time ago as well. Apparently it's a lake that has NO size limits and NO bas limits for any species. Research lake for the DNR maybe??

anyone have any info on this lake? Muskies present, if so how are they doing? Does it get stocked at all, naural repoduction?

just curious, had a walleye guy tell me a few years ago that the lake is thriving without any size or bag restrictions.

Greg,
This is a small experimental lake near Trout lake. To fish it you have to check in at the DNR station at the boat landing. There is no season, size restrictions or bag limits on any fish with the exception of walleye. The walleye used to be a free for all too, but last year they changed it to one fish over 28( I think). The DNR will advice you of any "rule changes" you may need to know before launching your boat. I think it is all natural reproduction sustaining the lake but I could be wrong.

I try to get up there a couple times before the actual musky opener in Wisconsin, its way more fun to be chucking baits than jigging for walleye. Have never had any success with big fish there but can usually find a few active males early in the spring.

Norm hit it, they changed the walleye regs to 28"....and people were whining about that too! The only thing the DNR asks is that you fill out a survey of what you caught and caught it on, at least that's what I did a few years back. The lake is on HwyM about halfway between hwy51 and Boulder Junction.

I've heard of good musky numbers, but nothing very big.

Norm..you hitting the Pelican Lake fisheree on Feb 5th?

GMG,

Probably not doing the ice thing on Pelican. I must be part bear because I seem to hibernate in the winter. I only get on the ice a couple times during the hardwater season. I am too busy catching up on the time away through the open water season to justify ice time.

I hear ya Norm.

Another interesting DNR lake will be opening for musky soon. I believe in the next 2 years Long Lake in Waushera Co will have a season. Long lake is a rearing lake for spotted gators. I've talked to a couple of people out there who've said they seen monsters. From what I understand, there isn't much for numbers, but a chance at a real whopper.

thx , was just curious to know (if any one does really know) what happens to the size of a low density fish like a musky if it is harvested at higher levels than a "normal" one bag daily limit season.

I've fished Long Lake for other species and have seen some very nice muskie. It would be nice if they opened it up for muskie but I have a feeling the lake would get absolutely pounded.

MM...I believe it'll open in 06 or 08. The DNR posted it about a year ago.

One thing to take into account with this lake is that it is a couple miles down a gravel road. And where you turn off CTH M there is a big sign that says fishing by permit only. I am sure many people don’t realize all you have to do to get a permit is check in at the DNR station at the landing. But as a result of this, it seems this lake gets very little pressure, compared to other more accessible Vilas county lakes. Other than before the season opens, this goes for walleye and musky. It will be curious to see what the trophy walleye limit does on the lake after years of no limit, no bag.

I don’t remember the totals on number of muskies kept per year out there, but I do remember seeing quite a few under 30 inches being kept, as well as some big ones. The lake is pretty much as described above, a pretty typical northern Wisconsin lake. It’s neat to fish up there when the ice goes out early, and I can get some time. I once caught a musky on April 4th up there, openwater fishing. That was cool.

Also the lake does not get speared.

Dude, I was wondering if your computer M1st button was broke?

I don't think very many muskies are kept from the lake. I have heard of a few higher 40" fish. I know a few people who really like the lake for musky...I have only fished it once. It would be an interesting lake to try to target muskies through the ice over New Years.

my whole point was to know what happens to a lake when lots of harvest has occured, especially smaller fish.

doses harvesting the smaller fish get rid of the smaller fish genes and promote bigger fish?

sounds like it's too remote of a lake and too small of a sample size to really know.

no biggie, slow at work and was just brainstorming.

thx much.
