Posts: 4266 | St Croix Premier 8' would be a good go to rod for bucktails and topwters. I go with the 8'Avid, but that would be out of your price range. Beav

Posts: 2089 | Mark, If you consider bumping the price a tad,I'd recommend looking into a custom rod.Very nice to have a longer handle on the big sticks. 3 of my 4 main rods are 8 1/2'(2 Thorne and 1 Franks Custom Rod)and each has a purpose.Oh yeah, lighter is really nice if you're chucking it for 15 hours!Feel free to e-mail me if you have any specific questions. And yes I do work at Thorne Bros., but had my 1st rod made by them almost 20 years ago. They know rods. | Just looking at a 7'9" Diamond Back custom rod from Thorne Brothers, but also the 8' St. Croix Avid or 8' St. Croix Premier. All great rods depending on what you want to spend?

Posts: 72 | Thank you for your kind words on our custom rods. As far as long rods, there are a few options. 1-a TB Custom Diamondback, 2-a St.Croix Premier or Avid, a Shimano Compre, a Fig Rig or a Lamiglass. All have 8' to 8'6" options. Since being sold to Shakespeare, All-Star no longer has a line of muskie rods (Big Game Series). That's what happens in big business--they just look at the overall sales numbers and not what they could do with a product line Brett Erickson www.thornebros.com

If you want to go heavy, and alot of top waters are heavy, you need to go to either the Avid 8' or the new Premier 8' Glass. The Avid is $230.00 and the glass Premier is $150.00

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | Excuse my saying so, but i feel that rating is a bit off on the 8' premier. I use it for 10" jakes(loads up pretty good) and many super heavy rubber shad body spinners. Decent topwater stick too for the most part, though not my preferred choice for it. I think it is a bit too heavy for medium bucktails, and have always thought the rating system on the premiers was a bit off. The 7'6" is actually a heavy rod compared to other manufacturers, as I use it as my primary jerk stick, once the handle is cut down to normal length(also cut the 8'er down). Just wanted to clarify that it is not too limber to throw some bigger stuff, and actually would be a decent choice for the really big bucktails over smaller ones. They may have changed it since I bought mine, but it is very well suited for the big tails like eagle tails etc. I like the rod though for the most part(though it is sort of heavy and kind of thick out towards the end like other premiers), and wouldn't mind another from santa. Posts: 2515 Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | I have both the 8' Avid and Premier and I agree, the rating is a bit on the light side for the Premier, but I definately notice a difference between the Avid and Premier when tossing heavier lures. On baits exceeding 3oz, the Premier starts feeling "noodley". The 8' Avid is probally the best stick I've owned, solid for everything I've tossed with it.
