I've read a few articles that state that the Abu Garcia 7000 is the best bucktail reel. I haven't been impressed with my garcias. How does the Calcutta 700 stack up? It also has a low gear ratio, but a large retreive rate per turn.

Is that bait of mine that you won at the raffle kicking your butt?
JUST KIDDING!
Which Garcias are you not impressed with? I wouldn't trade mine for nothin (other than less abused ones, hehe).

The c3 7000 is the best musky reel made for the money and mine has been bulletproof.

For more money, the Calcutta 400 TE is sweet and should be able to handle everything you need to toss!

The 7000 is a completly different reel than the 5500/6500 abu models. Its a real workhorse and the higher gear ratio model with the large spool REALLY picks up line fast. Great drag as well. I will say I had a bad experience with the new HSN 7000 this summer, this is the new narrow spool model and I guess they changed the gear materials or design somewhat on these gold colored reels. at any rate I had failure on 3 out of four in very short time frames. So if your shopping for a 7000 get one of the Black or Silver wide spool models in the higher gear ratio (5 to 1 ?) for burning tails.

I also have one of the TE model Calcuttas, pricey but a very nice reel .... worth the $ I think but not as fast as the 7000.

JLR, it's hard to say what the best bucktail reel is...do you like to fish Mepps #5 or EagleTails?

Abu 7000 is great bucktail reel. i have a few and realy enjoy them. You are right about the Calcutta 700, it does have a lower gear ratio, which is actually great. Calcutta 700 seems to have a lot of "cranking power" which makes for 10 hours of throwing Eagle Tails much much easier. I cannot really feel a speed difference the 7000 (abu does have different gears for different models of the 7000 too) and 700. since you pick up a lot of line w/ each crank of the 700 too, the lower gear ratio isnt really a big deal to, when considering loosing speed. the cranking power is great for big blades.

Any reel will fail w/ use and abuse. it's fishing, that's how it goes. I've been using 700's and 7000's for a few years now...for my birthday i'm getting another Calcutta 700. they are sweet, for sure.
Give Shimano a try since you it appears you have gave Garcia a try. I think you'll be happy w/ your gold reel. Both reels are great and moving towards being standards in musky fishing. The bigger reels last alot longer w/ these big baits.

I have a C4 that's junk and a 400 TE that I love. I have two Millionaires also that are pretty nice. I mainly throw Giant Killers, but want to go from #5's up to Eagle Tails.

Sounds like if you love the TE 400 and that won't do it on big baits, then as Tom suggested the 700 would be the ticket in the Shimano brand.
