I was just wondering if you could explain the differences in forward trolling compared to back trolling. and explain when to do one or the other and tell the pros and cons or which one you prefer

As Gen. Patton always said, ..."always go forward, never back.." Going backwards is for backward thinking fishermen, do you reel your reel backwards? Do you put your shorts on the outside of your pants? Do you launch your boat by driving your truck in first? If you answer yes to any of these questions, you are fun to watch. If you want to go slower, drift.

Always forward troll, backward trolling was the only legal way to troll back in the day. If you have a tiller you can backtroll if you like, I sometimes do it when using camp boats just to stay in position fishing walleyes. If you have the proper musky boat, there is never a need to do it.

Back trolling, as far as I am familiar with, it is done by walleye guys to go VERY slow. It's usually not needed when muskie fishing even when you want to go what would be slow in muskie terms.

Backtrolling, lets see, if you have a tiller boat - if you want to follow a breakline perfectly - if you want a precise speed - if you are running a rigged sucker and looking for musky, I would say backtrolling can be a key way to present a large live bait. Just ask Bucher,Keck,Herbeck and many others! Only single problem that I can see it is ILLEAGAL for me to do where I want to do it! Backtrolling did start in the early 70`s from Lindners?Worstad?Petros? For mostly walleye but many took it to another level(another tool if you will) and started catching big muskys, hence no more in Wi.(class "a") waters. Good/Bad? Thats a whole different thread, but back fishing as some old timers called it is truely a lost art!

'Backtrolling' was legalized in the late '80s in N.WI, an area notorious for being anti-trolling (although single hook sucker rigs were deemed OK).
It was meant to keep the big Lake Michigan rigs from trolling the smaller inland lakes in Vilas/Oneida Counties. It was banned in (I believe) 1993.
You'd be surprised how many muskies can be triggered by ultra-slow trolled cranks in the summer.
