Posts: 157 Location: Collegeville Pa | I sent the Sportsman's Repair shop 3 reels several weeks ago. I have tried calling and emailing them and get no answer on the phone and an unknown address via email. Does anybody know if the shop is still running?????? I'm getting nervous about my reels!! Thanks Greg

Posts: 479 Location: Eden Prairie & Pine Island | You are not alone, man. I sent a reel in to this guy the beginning of the season I thought he'd be okay because he advertised in Musky Hunter magazine, but I only sent him one reel that wasn't too expensive. I heard nothing for weeks. I emailed and got returns with error messages; I sent him a messge through his web site, and he sent a message back saying they were running about a six week turn around. Seven or eight weeks later, yet, and nothing. Sent him another message, and he said he'd look into it. Well the season is over and I didn't get anything back. EVERYONE BEWARE.

Posts: 1046 | You guys will get your stuff, its more like a 3 month turnaround time. I tend to use different vendors because of that reason. They will be done correct but!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Waiting sucks! P.S- This new guy I found at Townline Sports/Bait/Tackle did me great this season. Great work and fast too! I lost the contact numberthough! Manotwish Waters Wisconsin! Maybe some of the other guys have contact info! Went inthere on a friday night with 3 brokedown abu`s and left a 1/2 hour later with 3 fully working reels for under $25.00. He will get the rest of mine sometime this winter! Posts: 1438 | I've had Chuck do some repairs several times. He does do good work and isn't a crook. Not to worry. But, I do all of my cleaning and most repairs myself now. Handy - took one reel with a broken pawl to a guy in Eagle River with the same results. No idea what the guys name or number was but he's east of 17 just before you cross the bridge. Like maybe 5-6 houses on the right. His house faces the river. Something to keep in mind if you're in a reel emergency (doh, that was bad). Scot

Posts: 663 | Last I heard (sometime this summer) the guy in Eagle River you spoke about stopped doing repair work. If you're in the area and need some emergency stuff done Don Marley at Guide's Choice has Abu parts and can usually get you back up and running. I've had Chuck at Sportsman's repair do work for me and he was excellent. In August he told me he was just swamped with work and playing catch-up. He suggested to me to wait till the season was over before sending stuff in for annual check-up. Another option for you guys is Coren's Rod & Reel Service in Chicago. Phone there is (773) 631-5202. I believe they usually have a booth at the Tri-Esox show at Harper College too.

Posts: 479 Location: Eden Prairie & Pine Island | Thanks, Treats! I've got a couple TE's I'd like to have cleaned, lubed, etc. this off season. I'll tell them you suggested them.

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | Gman I would not hesitate to send those TE's in to Shimano either for cleaning and service. Very quick, and very good service from them too. chucks work is very good, but you often have to wait. Off season is best for his services I've found.

| I would send my reels to the manufacture before anybody else. They are generally quicker and cost less than the other guys. Plus they will inspect the reel and replace everything that needs replacing, not just what they happen to have in stock. Do you guys think some of the delay may be from the shops sending the reels to the manufacture to be repaired under warranty and then when they get them back they charge for the parts that the company put in? Trucst me this happens more often than you think. | |||

Posts: 686 Location: Tomahawk, Wisconsin | Chuck Nelson of Nelsons Bait in Rhinelander is a master with ABU/Garcia reels. He worked for them for years and was their reel repair guru, he has a huge stock of parts, real quick turnaround too. Give him a call at 715-369-1900, he is really reasonable, he will do ya right!

Posts: 1438 | I forgot there's one other place around Eagle River too. Critter Cabin Rod and Reel Service Jay Richman Conover, WI 54519 715-547-6338 [email protected] I haven't used him but he is the brother of one of our Capital City MI board members. If you bring your reel to the monthly meetings, he'll usually run them up there and bring them back when they are done. A bunch of the members send their stuff up to Jay and I haven't heard any negatives. Jay also does a reel maintenance blip in the monthly newsletters as well. Just another option.

| theedz155 is right. He's the bro-in-law of our newly elected Prez, SteveR. Jay is pretty good and fast too. I've learned a bunch from his atricles that he's submitted to the "Muskie Ink", newsletter for CC MI. For you guys that can't wait, next month Jay will fire up his computer and have a few articles over the winter months. - Gerard | |||

Posts: 1185 Location: Wishin I Was Fishin' | I've never had any time issues with The Sportsman's Repair. Chuck is a great guy and has always been good to me. He told me a couple of months ago that he puts the Smoothy drag washers in all the ABU's they work on. I feel ABU's really need this improvement too.
