I stumbled across these pictures on a different website and was quite disturbed on the actions of these people who would do such a thing. This may have already come across this site and if it has I apologize. What makes a person do something so harsh to the resources that we try to protect? Is this happening on a bunch of lakes or is this sort of act very scarce? I believe these pictures were taken from Lake of The Woods.

This has already been covered here, Troy, it's in the archives. A mess, that's for sure.

Steve, I looked for this in the search section and didnt see anything? Can someone point me into where it is? What ever happened with that and where was it exaclty? Thanks Steve,

Troy

P.S.
Mark Gostisha Will be responsible for my divorce.....He has officially got me sort of hooked on this musky fishing thing. I believe I will be making many trips to the Land O Lakes area this fall.

What has been done:

1. We've hit the media in order to generate awareness of the issue and has been successful (these net sightings were denied by the OMNR earlier this year, in fact Winnipeg River lodge owners were told, "no commercial netting is taking place" as they tried to ram through a 2 walleye limit for the river for 2005). No longer can any of this be disputed.

2. We've sent letters to various tourism groups and politicians voicing our concerns. You can continue to help by contacting the Sunset Country, NOTO, etc orgs letting them know you are considering fishing elsewhere unless this native netting is severely curbed in NW Ontario.

3. We're collecting info on buyers of NW Ont walleye in an effort to make them aware of what they are supporting by buying these fish. Anyone with info of this nature, please send it and we will make good use of it.

4. We are in the process of setting up an organization to deal with these sorts of issues in Manitoba and NW Ontario (Mantario SportFishing Alliance) since existing organizations in particular the OFAH are silent on this issue and appear to not care.

I have a question here, was this net abandoned? Or was it lost? I was unaware that they had ever quit netting fish, but normally the nets are tended. Have they quit netting up there?

These are examples of many unmarked nets being found this past summer, the netting is still taking place and increasing dramatically. In fact many have said they've seen more nets out this year than in the last 20 put together. LOTW commercial fishing was bought out by our government years ago and was the biggest reason for the quality of the fishery we have today. Allowing native commercial fishing is almost certainly going to degrade this fishery once again.

You guys going to Cass....watch out for nets. They're supposed to be marked, but I found several with just a milk jug and a piece of styrofoam. I was lucky enough to just get a lure tangleg, that I had to cut out, but I saw two guys in front of Break on the Lake East with nets tangled in their props. Great place to put them....in front of a lodge near an opening that they call "the narrows".
I'm affraid that we are stuck with it, though I'm sure that none of us like it.
