How do you guys freshen up your "do not dryclean, do not machine wash, do not even think about it" rain suits?

I've got a stearns walleye set that needs some help...got that wet dog kind of smell. I tried to machine wash it on gentle cycle with no detergent then hung it up to dry....didn't work. I also put it in the dryer with a bounce sheet on low heat for a while. It smelled like bounce AND a wet dog.

any advice?

Thanks,
Jono

Jono, maybe its you and not the rainsuit!LOL I have the sterns walleye bibs and I wash mine with soap in the washing machine no problem. I think the tag just says not to dry them in the dryer. Maybe yours are different, but the washer works for mine.

First a question: Is the suit gore-tex or a similar type product?

If so, there is a detergent that does not hurt the fabric called "Tech Wash" Cabela's sells it and said it works on their "dry Plus" clothing series, which from what I know is basically the same thing as gore-tex without the name (I easilly could be wrong on this...not like it would be the first time...).

What they told me when I purchased, is the detergent hurts/clogs the membrane, but this tech wash is made specifically for that issue. Then there is a product that is used after the tech wash which re-seals the garment...same company as tech wash (tech seal maybe?) but with a different name on it (bottle is even the same) After that the water beads right up on the garment.

I know my suit gets a musty smell after some time, so a wash and a seal works well...

Good luck!!

#3 Fabreeze - I used the stuff just in the last week to get some of the "rank" smell off the inside and ouside of my suit. Guess I gotta quit eating pickled eggs when fishing!!!!!

Jason ya we got the same suit, I'm sure. We'll find out who/what stinks in a few weeks! LOL!

Steve, it is a stearns knock off "breathable" fabric.

Cory, I'm with ya on the pickled eggs - I like tabasco and black pepper on mine.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I'm not surprised that Jono likes pickled eggs with tobasco and pepper, and I'm not surprised that his rainsuit stinks. One time he brought green chile muffins in my boat. Sorry, Jono, I prefer blueberry.

Jono married the gal that made those muffins ... I guess they're two peas in a pod.

I wish I could remember the weird sandwich you brought one time. I'll have to think about it and report back later.
