Posts: 622 Location: Seymour, WI | Wondering if most of you guys have a favorite topwater that you throw in all situations or if you try to match the bait to the lake you're fishing? For example if you're fishing a small clearwater lake do you prefer a more subtle bait like a ZZ toper? or If you're fishing dark water do you always go with louder baits like a pacemaker? Do you throw loud baits on calm clear lakes? I have several different topwaters that I really like to throw including, Awaker, Pacemaker, Topper Stopper, Tally Wacker, ZZ toper, Phat boy, Jackpot, and Hawg Wobbler. Can some of you please comment if you have situations that you like to throw these baits in? or if I should just snap one that's easy to ues and go with it? Grass,

Posts: 305 Location: Illinois | Grass, for calm situations I like throwing a creeper or hawg wobbler, something slow and subtle. For a mild chop I like a jackpot or single prop bait like the top raider. For anything more than a mild chop I go to a super top raider or a rough runner. If it is raining lightly the wisher top water has been killer. hj

| Calm fish spotted, Hawg Wobbler, Creepenstein, or Bride of Creepenstein depending on size of fish Calm, no fish spotted, Super Topraider, Topraider, Jackpot, Doc, Top Walker, or Cisco Kid Topper (depending on my mood) Waves, Magnum Lowrider, Pacemaker, Lowrider, or Buzzbait in that order (depending on wave action and water I'm fishing) Steve | |||

Giant Jackpot, Top Raider, Slammer Thundertail, Skimmer Floating Buctail Slammer Thunderhead (In general, the more waves the better the success!) Edited by Steve Van Lieshout 9/14/2004 1:42 PM

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | I prefer the Topraider for search situations in calm to light chop situations, and the tapdancer(the predecessor to the pacemaker) for the same situations on waters where the fish seem to have seen topraiders over and over already. i like the creeper and jointed creeper for calm, dark or fish sighted situations by summer, and the hawg wobbler for the same situations when the water gets down to the 60's and less in fall. The Rylure Globe or Wick Globe is my favorite heavy chop surface lure hands down.

Posts: 827 Location: Minneapolis,Minnesota | I like to throw small in-line buzzbaits if the water is real calm, especially if I'm fishing shallow weeds or reeds. I think they work well because of the subtleness of them, just a gurgle on the surface plus it doesn't make the huge splash down many other topwaters do. I like the CJ's and the Top Cop looks pretty cool if there was a bit of a chop. If the wind picks up a bit I'll typically go with a Pacemaker or Topraider as a search bait. If it's really blowing and there is a healthy chop I think the best choice would have to be a Low Rider. I've yet to nail one on it but have seen it produce enough to keep throwing it. It just sticks to the waves and kicks up a ton of water. I also always seem to have a weagel on another rod and no matter what conditions I always throw that at a spot if nothing else is working. Big girls love it.

Posts: 285 | Hi Guys, I also like the idea of fast-moving topwaters for searching with minimal chance of weeds fouling the hooks. I use Topper Stopper (Mouldy's) and a Hawg Wobbler modified to run faster. Big fan also of Bucher Top Raider, and have been waiting with baited breath for a crack at a Weagle for a throwback or fish-spotted make-em-eat lure. Maenwhile I am working on getting ready with a Mania Doc. later, papa joe

Posts: 622 Location: Seymour, WI | Thanks for the replies guys. Do you ever have luck going against the rules and throwing loud noisy baits in calm clear conditions or do you think loud baits in calm conditions would put the fish off? Thanks, Grass

Posts: 827 Location: Minneapolis,Minnesota | Heck no, throw the noisy stuff. Piss them off. I throw the other stuff because that's what I feel confident throwing. I know of lots of guys in Wisconsin who jerk the heck out of those Topper Stoppers over weeds in calm conditions and do very well. Those little baits will kick up a heck of a commotion.

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | grass, remember there are no rules. The big Globe is by far the noisiest surface lure I can personnally think of(below or above water), and I often use it in glass calm conditions with success. the pacemaker(or tapdancer which is much the same) is also quite noisy underwater and works as well as any other lure. Don't forget that the Hawg Wobbler is one of the loudest lures underwater, and really, the best application for it is under at least mostly calm situations.
