I was fishing Tonka and at the end of the day was going to hit one last spot. I was real tired and not real alert as I pulled the bait out of the water a 42" muskie came after it and got it. Boy did it put up a fight.

Boat side hits are always heart stoppers, a number of years ago I was fishing with Ranger Rick Kruger when a 50+ did that to me after a number of 8"s and not seeing anything I lifted the bucktail out of the water for the next cast when this beast came flying 3 ft out of the water with it's jaws snapping it hit the bucktail in mid air and crashed back down spraying water all over the place I was soaking wet and missed the fish Ranger Rick just laughed and said "YOUR SUPPOSED TO SET THE HOOK"

Nice job Teck. Catching a 42 is cool for me anytime. Add to it that you caught it boatside and it's even better. That will make your day.

About the last 15min of our vermillion trip and no action my son had a musky grab his zam with inches of line out. His thumb got caught in between the spool and frame and the musky straightened out both treble hooks. He had one sore thumb and the strike kinda scared him a bit but he can't wait to musky fish again.

The same thing happened to me on Mon. I was twitching a Grandma bait and did a nice smooth figure 8 at the boat. I did not see a fish follow, but as I looked up from the water a 41-42" fish smashed the bait. I'm not sure if the bait was in or out of the water when the fish hit. Scared the crap out of me. The fish was going nuts on just a couple feet of line. I was trying to loosen the drag, but eventually the fish did a head shake while facing me and was gone.

So my question to you guys is do you rely on the drag in a situation like this or do you do your figure 8's in free spool? I know I've read lots of posts from pros who rely on the drag and just loosen it up when a fish hits at the boat, but I can't help but think I would have had a better chance of getting that fish if I'd been if free spool. My drag was not set overly tight when the fish hit.

Dark water fishing teaches you what a thumb is for. Fishing dark water gets you into the habit of hitting the release and using your thumb on the spool in a figure-eight. What ever the water clarity stand-offs with an engaged reel at boatside usually end up badly.
